ROW80 Check-in #58 Permission to…

You’ve heard the advice: Don’t compare yourself to others, right? And, you’ve heard something like this one too: watch the folks who have the career you want. Learn from what they’re doing.

I believe in both of these ideas. However, doing the latter can have a direct impact in your ability to do the first. It’s important to remember that comparison is only helpful IF it pushes you forward towards your goal.

I think it’s a good time to remind myself of my theme for this round: be the best I can be. <~~this theme is all about me, lol, it’s not about anyone else. In this theme, I’m giving myself permission to think completely selfishly, because it’s not what someone else did today. It’s about what I am doing today. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. It’s about what I am doing today.

Today I am thankful for all that I have, especially my family who I love more than anything. I’m also thankful I have the guts to work towards my goals one day at a time.

So, what are you doing today? What are you giving yourself permission to do? Are you remembering to stop and smell the roses? Below you’ll find a couple pictures from my garden. 🙂

The Goals – week-3 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters – done.Pink Hyacinthus
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting – done, except for Monday AND Friday, ugh. Evil day jobs are the worst, except on payday, lol. I did make some excellent progress on edits this week. I’m almost ready for my next read through.
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep, and my calorie limit – not done. I worked out twice and then I got hit with a sinus cold. I still feel terrible although the sunny weather is helping. WEEK 4 PRIORITY
  • Weekly Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure) – done. I’ve been working on trying to fit this goal into regular rotation and this week I made a couple of changes and it worked. Sometimes all it takes is a shift in how you track things or a shift in strategy. I’m keeping this as a priority until I see a pattern. WEEK 4 PRIORITY
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities – done. I completed a couple deposits and mailed a bunch of bills.Daffodil
  • Organize something in the house each week – done. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my husbands basement project, the play area for our two boys. He’s making good progress. He finished the wall, hung the basketball hoop, and added legs to a table that had none. Now, I’m helping out with the cleaning up, sorting, and putting the toys back. It’s going to be a fabulous space. We’ll finish it just in time for the weather to be nice and they’ll be playing outside, lol.

ROW80 Check-in #57 Pushing Forward and Fun Projects

Apparently, when an introvert is not careful, the time she takes to recovery can turn into a bad case of procrastination. Oops. I’m supposed to be working at being the best I can be. My best certainly does not include procrastination.

I didn’t accomplish as much as I could have this week, but I did accomplish a good bit. Yesterday, my disappointment tried to pull out some negative thinking. I recognized that ugly thought process, because it was followed by thoughts of taking an extended break or quitting. Yesh. Really? Really! I took a step away from the computer, did a home related project, and read a good book. The break did me good and quieted my negative nelly.

Have you dealt with your own negative nelly lately? Please share your steps to ward her off, pretty please.

The Goals – week-2 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters – done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting – done, except for Friday and almost yesterday. I started the week strong with lots of edit work and craft study. However, I did a poor job of managing my time this week and by Friday I had so much to do, outside of writing, I didn’t get to any of my goals. Boo! By Saturday, I felt tired and discouraged. I tried to work through it, as I mentioned above. Finally, I settled into my craft book for a good read.
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep, and my calorie limit – not done. I worked out once and only kept up with my water goal. I’m sure the loss of this goal contributed to nelly showing her ugly face. WEEK 3 PRIORITY
  • Weekly Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure) – kind of done. Although performing the routines is a part of the study, and I did make time for Nia yesterday, I need to do more than just the movement. I need to start thinking about my Nia studies like my writing craft studies. I’ve found a way to fit in my writing craft books several times a week. I need to do the same with Nia. WEEK 3 PRIORITY
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities – done. I collected the LAST tuition payments for the year, completed a deposit, and attended a board Jewelry hung inside an empty Framesmeeting.
  • Organize something in the house each week – I love jewelry. I always have on earrings. Always. But I often forget everything else. I have several places to store it all which is great, except when I forget it’s there or I forget to put them away. A couple weeks ago, I found this fun idea on Pinterest and I already had the frames. So, what do you think? Is it cute? Now my jewelry is sorted into four places, but I’m hoping this easy to grab from display will help me to remember to wear them.

ROW80 Check-in #56 One Step at a Time

This round I’ve challenged myself to be the best I can be. Some weeks that will mean reaching all of my goals and some weeks it will not. The promise is to be the best I can be. Our best effort does not always mean accomplishing everything. I’ll need to simply be honest with myself and take a fresh look at each week.

Each week I want to take advantage of what I learned and accomplished in the previous week and set myself up for success, not failure. So, what did I learn this week? What did I accomplish?

I learned why it takes me so long to recover after crazy, fun times. Jenny Hansen had this post in her A to Z challenge this week. I learned I’m 89% introvert. Wow. 89%. Geesh. I adore my family and friends and I love spending time with them, but after, I need time to recover and here’s why: Introverts gain energy from time spent by themselves.

I Promise to no longer fault myself for taking time to recover.

Last week (Easter week) I hosted my family and spent four days at an in-door water park surrounded by people. I was exhausted by the end of the week. I had such big plans for the time between rounds and wanted to start round 2 with a bang, but I needed time to recover. Ugh. Nope, I promised, remember. 🙂

I took time over this past weekend to recover and Monday I was fresh and ready to be the best I can be. Sweet. I finished my Margie packet. Yeah! I started a new craft book. I got back into editing my WIP and even spent time with Nia. Sweet.

Now, this weekend I’m spending time with my two besties from high school. Squee. I love those two ladies, but by Sunday night I’ll be in recovery mode. I’m hoping to start fresh on Monday. We’ll see what happens. I’ll remember my promise and not let my recovery ruin my week.

Did you learn something about yourself this week?

The Goals – week-1 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters – done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting – done. I finished lecture 9 and the wrap-up in my Margie packet and a finished another round of edits on my WIP. I was planning to start a new Margie packet right away, but I’ve started to read another book and then I’ll get back to Margie. I’m really enjoying Writing Love: Screenwriting Tricks for Authors II by Alexandra Sokoloff
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep, and my calorie limit – not done. Boo. I kept up the water and calorie limit, but I only worked out once and I didn’t get enough sleep. WEEK 2 PRIORITY
  • Weekly Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure) – done. One of the things I adored about studying ballet was the repetition.  Each morning was spent at the bar doing the same or similar movements. The simplest moves can be very complicated when you take the time to break them down and feel your way through each one. Nia has a similar process and it’s called the 52-moves. It’s been sometime since I took the time to think and feel my way through each move in the Nia practice. This week I took the time and the practice was invigorating.
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities – done. We’re getting close to the end of the school year and finally some of the pressure is drifting away. I attended a parent meeting this week and collected tuition payments.
  • Organize something in the house each week – I prepared my home for company this week and my hubs started his spring project of finishing the walls in our boys basement play room. It’s his task, but I’m pretty excited about it.

ROW80 Round 2 2013 Goals

Be the best you can be. It’s that simple and it is my goal for this round of 80-days. A Round of Words In 80 Days or ROW80 is the writing challenge that knows you have a life. Join in at any time. State your goals and check-in on Wednesdays and or Sundays. Have you read Kait Nolan’s post that started this round? Be The Best You and State Your Round 2 #ROW80 Goals. It’s a great empowering read and a fabulous way to start this round.

I’m not looking for perfection here. Nope. I’m looking for progress in this marathon of a writer’s journey.

Progress. What does that really mean? What am I really looking for this round? I want to finish edits on two projects. I want to find some beta readers. I want to start writing that next book. I want to read books. I want to study my craft. I want to find a way to fit Nia studies into my week and I want to have some fun.

My ROW80 goals are all in addition to my already full schedule of evil day job, mom, and home maker responsibilities. It’s up to me. The power is in my hands. It’s my choice to be here. It’s my choice to show up and push for my dreams.

Good habits have been my friend the last couple of rounds. Although I have no plans to try and cement my day with rules, I’m looking to build on my healthy patterns and take advantage of my day.

My goal is to be the best me I can be. I may not always be perfect, but I’ll keep showing up.

Do you have a strategy for the next 80-days?

The Goals

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep, and my calorie limit
  • Weekly Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities
  • Organize something in the house each week

Here’s to a fabulous round of 80-days.

Another round of 80-days is coming to an end this week. I refined my routine and made great strides in some places and others still need improvement.

I restarted my Margie packet and got through 7-lectures in Empowering Character Emotions. I lost ground while I was sick, but I’m still hoping to finish this packet and start the next BEFORE the second round of 80-days begins. Starting my day with craft study has become a habit this round and it’s such a good thing. I’m very pleased. I read one other craft book this round too.

This round I also I helped my CP with 3 manuscripts, I added 10k to my newest WIP to finish it and took it through several editing passes before sending it off to my CP. I read 12-books this round and hope to top that next round. Lots of great reads in my ereader right now.

I have many things to be proud of in this round however progress in my Nia studies is not one of them. I’m still not finding the time for this goal, but I’m not giving up on it. Do you have something you never get to in your week? Since I’m not getting to it, I really should try to work it into my schedule on Monday. Oh boy.

I’m most proud of my full request though. It’s my first, hopefully not my last, and it still puts a smile on my face. I also became a year older, had great fun with friends, saw a concert, and went skiing. Not shabby round one.

How did the last couple of months go for you? What are you going to try and improve in the next 80-days?

The Goalsweek-11 results

  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities- done. I finished several deposits and attended a Board meeting.
  • Organize something in the house each week- done. My family is doing me a solid, they’re coming to my house for Easter. Yeah! Oh no, I have to host Easter. I’ve been in crazy planning mode all week. I made these bags for the Easter egg hunt, I’ve made a few other things too. I’ve planned the meal. It’s a lot of work to hold a family function, but it will be worth it

ROW80 check-in #54 Forced Vacation

Click to find links to the other ROW80 participants

I was knocked down by illness this week. My oldest got it first and the next day it took over my body. I spent all of Tuesday in bed. I can’t remember the last time I slept that much. I dragged myself out of bed on Wednesday, my muscles protested but I forced their hand. Turns out, I should have listen to them, it wasn’t long before I was back in bed. I’m still working on building up my energy. I swear my youngest has gained ten-pounds this week, but the hubs is telling me no. I’m still pretty weak and I have no appetite, but I need to eat to build my strength. It’s an uncomfortable circle right now. It’s also been a monster of a week. Now my youngest has a fever. Seriously. Spring, where are you.

The week wasn’t a total fail, nope. Wednesday, when I dragged myself out of bed, I found a full request in my inbox. That’s right, A FULL REQUEST!! 😀

It seems the world went right on spinning while I was in bed. Veronica Mars is going to be a movie, totally awesome. We have a new pope too, rad.

My effort this week on goals is pretty much nonexistent. It stressed me out at first and then I stopped feeling guilty about it. My system was refusing to negotiate anyway. The only thing I can do is listen to me, get better, and start fresh this week. Have you had a forced vacation recently?

The Goalsweek-10 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting- not done. The only progress I made here was some reading on my CPs latest WIP on Saturday. WEEK 11 PRIORITY.
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit- not done WEEK 11 PRIORITY.
  • Daily Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)- not done WEEK 11 PRIORITY
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities- done. I finished an important letter and made several deposits.
  • Organize something in the house each week- done. I’ve talked about making improvements to my work-space and last week I had another idea. Friday I did force myself out of the house for some fresh air and I picked up a few supplies. My husband has a Container Store run to make for me and then I should be good to give this idea a try.

ROW80 check-in #53 Laughter and a Promise

Click to find links to the other ROW80 participants

What would you do if you opened your front door on a Sunday afternoon and found your two best friends who you haven’t seen in over a year?

I’ll tell you what I’d do, because I did it last Sunday. I screamed, I hugged, and then I started to cry. Some surprises are down right fabulous. Last weekend I survived celebrated another birthday and my prince of a husband contacted my two besties and asked for something he knew I wanted. They both live a couple hours away and I hardly ever get to see them. It was one of the best days ever. We talked and laughed for over five hours. We reminisced about our crazy teenage years, experiences we’ve shared and missed over the years, and we supported each other.

Those two girls have my back and I know they always will no matter what. Not much can lift your spirits than knowing something like that for certain. I’ve made some good friends through the years and many of them I’ve met over the past year since starting this blog. Thank you for being here, I appreciate each of you.

When I started this journey I set many goals for myself. We all know anything worth fighting for is worth waiting for. There is no better time to remind yourself of that than when you come up against a hurdle or when you get knocked down. I’ve come a long way in the past year, but I have many hurdles and hoops to go.

The next hurdle I come to, I’m going to remember my two friends, remember how they have my back. I’ll keep picking myself up and I’ll keep going. At each hurdle I’ll take the time to figure out if what I’m doing is still putting me in the path towards my goals. If not, I’ll change my path, but I’ll keep going. This is my promise to me, my birthday gift to me.

Have you had a happy surprise recently? How do you push past hurdles put in your path? Have you made a promise to yourself lately?

The Goalsweek-9 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting- done. I finished the sixth Lecture in my Margie Packet. I finished editing my WIP and sent it to the CP. I also got a WIP I haven’t finished loaded into Scrivener, I’m hoping to finally figure out the end.
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit- DONE.
  • Daily Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)- kind of done. This week I enjoyed new movement and got lost in the joy of dancing in my bodies way. WEEK 10 PRIORITY
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities- done. I finished some additional reporting this week and attended a parent meeting. Finally an easier week.
  • Organize something in the house each week- done. My parents came up this weekend. While I organized my work space (the dining room table) in preparation for their arrival, I had an idea for how to better organize the paperwork I keep around me. I’m looking forward to making some simple purchases that will neaten my workspace and make it easier to clear the space when needed. I also cleaned out my frig, gave it a good scrub. So nice when you can see all the yummies.

ROW80 check-in #52 Editing and Birthday Treats

My goal this week was to look on the bright side.  Yesterday I turned another year older, the annual event I’ve come to loathe. Oh, I know it’s just a number. I even tried to play a few games with it. I tried not to think about it, that didn’t work. I tried to stall, but the calendar kept moving. I tried to convince myself I was 10-years younger  I’m too smart for that one. Figures.

If I have to turn older then we can all eat cake,

looks like someone’s already eaten half of this one. Bet it was yummy.

While I was trying to ignore my impending dooms day, I dove into edits. Last week I had a hard time getting the ball rolling, but this week the wheels started to turn and I finished the first (for story) and second (to fix passive voice, remove unnecessary words, and add in all kinds of visceral responses) read throughs. I’m going to give it one more read through and then I will send it to the CP. I will.

I survived my birthday and I cruised through a week of edits <– bright side. Look at me. I’m a champion. 🙂

What have you championed lately? Tell me your happy endings and let’s celebrate together.

The Goalsweek-8 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting- done. I finished the fifth and started the sixth Lectures in my Margie Packet and I edited everyday this week. I’ve read through the WIP twice now and it’s time to warn the CP. It’s almost ready.
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit- DONE. By the hair of my chinny chin chin 🙂
  • Daily Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)- kind of done. A part of my teacher membership I can pick 4-routines a year from the library. The packet includes, the music CD, the routine on a DVD, and the standard supporting documents. I have not yet picked one, silly me. I picked one this week and it arrived yesterday. I’m looking forward to the new movement. WEEK 9 PRIORITY
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities- done. I’m actually surprised I got anything else done this week. This goal took a massive amount of time. I finished deposits, reports, invoicing, and prep for a huge event yesterday which I did not attend. I was too busy hiding celebrating my birthday. Anyways, I got it all done. Wow.
  • Organize something in the house each week- done. Well, sort of. It was my birthday yesterday. So instead of organizing the house I pampered myself with at home spa stuff. I organized myself a bit, that counts, right? lol. You can agree with me, it was my birthday. 🙂

ROW80 check-in #51 Resolutions and Adventures

I had fun this week and a bit of adventure too. Here it is the end of February and I remembered to live out one of my New Year’s Resolutions. Do you remember yours? Dig them out, it might bring you a very happy day like it did for me.

One of my resolutions: Find time for the things I enjoy outside of books and Nia, like downhill skiiing…Take time each week to make sure one of these things is on my calendar.

We are coming to the end of ski season here in Michigan and, until recently, we weren’t getting a lot of snow. This week I faced an important decision: take advantage of the week and do something I enjoy or stay home and work on the lengthy to-do list. Hmm. It was a harder decision than it should have been.

it’s actually been two-years since I’ve skied. I know, terrible. Last year, I let the season slip by, but not this year. Luckily, skiing is much like riding a bike, your body’s muscle memory can remember what to do. Of course, the more often you ski the better your muscles will be at remembering.

Interesting!

After all the prep work of layering, gathering supplies, driving to the hill, getting on the boots, lugging my stuff in, getting my lift ticket, trekking to the lift, skis on, and butt in the chair…lift ;), I starting seeing many similarities to a writer’s life.

The more often your butt is in the seat the better you’ll be at your craft.

So, there I am at the top of the hill, such a pretty view, but I was not looking out at the view, nope. I was looking down at what looked like an icy terrain. Crap. My local hill is usually groomed so nicely, but the weather really hasn’t been cooperating this year with all the snows and melts and snows. So many things out of my control <– sounds like a writer’s life, doesn’t it. I reminded myself, I knew what to do, knees soft, weight forward, turn to slow down. Eek! I went for it.SJ's home hill

That first run was terribly shaky, the icy slope didn’t help. I wanted to hit the delete button and try again. I got back on the chair lift and went to a different trail. I tried something different, but I had the same results, another icy slope and a shaky run. It didn’t work for me. Again, I tried a different trail. On the chair lift, I remembered I had yet to put in my ear buds. What a difference music makes. The third trip down, I tried another trail, with the help of the music and finally a fluffy, un-icy terrain, I started to get my groove back. Over the next couple of runs, my confidence appeared, I gained speed, shifted better into my turns, and I flew down the hill. So much fun.

It took effort and determination. I had to put faith in my abilities. When it wasn’t working, I tried something a little different. I kept at it. I held on to my foundation and built on it. I didn’t give up. When it all came together, I had the time of my life. The runs became effortless.

For the next hour and a half I went up and down the hill and I had so much fun. The whole experience was an excellent reminder of what we live everyday with our writing.

And the bonus analogy: Taking off your boots feels so good it’s like… (I’ve heard some dirty endings to this sentence, but I’ll go a different way) the pure bliss to be found when you type “The End.”

Of course my to-do list is ugly now, but it was worth it. So, tell me, have you had an adventure lately or something that reminds you of the writing journey?

Also, have you had a chance yet to see my Most Romantic flash? The link is below if you want a look see.

The Goalsweek-7 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting- almost done. I finished the forth AND got half way through the fifth Lectures in my Margie Packet. I only edited on two days. I didn’t get to this goal everyday. I need to dig into my edits next week, it’s currently slow going, I need to try again and find my groove. WEEK 8 PRIORITY
  • Workout a minimum of three times a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit- DONE. I got in three workouts this week. Wahoo 😀
  • Daily Nia study (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)- not done. WEEK 8 PRIORITY
  • Stay on top of my co-op preschool Treasurer responsibilities- done. I deposited a ridiculous amount of checks this week and did lots of reporting too.

ROW80 check-in #50 Living the Routine

I have some fun news to share. Did you know that  holds a flash fiction challenge every SMTT-romThursday, called the #ThursThreads Challenge? I entered for the first time this past Thursday and won Most Romantic Story!! 😀 I’ve been smiling ever since. To make it all the sweeter, one of my favorite authors was the judge this week, Sandra Bunino!! <– Love her books. Be sure to come back on Tuesday, I’ll be sharing my winning flash and the photo that helped inspire the words.

Toot Toot!! 😀 Okay, now onto the ROW80 post…

Any journey is filled with ups and downs, triumphs and struggles. We know this. We’ve heard the very true saying:

“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well. If it is worth attaining, it is worth fighting for. If it is worth experiencing, it is worth putting aside time for.” ― Author Unknown

But do we know it down to our bones or do we have to remind ourselves? I took a look at the tiles of my last 5-ROW80 posts: A New Routine, Something is Working, Can I Get a Do Over?, Starting Fresh, Slow and Steady, Perseverance. Hmm, interesting. I see the ups and downs of the last 5 weeks right there.

I dug out that famous quote to remind myself, like I keep doing and will keep doing. I want this journey. One thing I know that will help: I’d like to become my own best friend, my own personal cheerleader. Some weeks I’m better at the personal friendship bit than others. I love supporting my friends, so why not me too?

My goals are worth doing and I want to do them well. They are so worth fighting for. I don’t want to just live day to day, I want to experience the journey. I want to push past my fears and keep trying. That’s why I’m here.

I’ll continue to mold my routine to keep me moving forward. I’ll remember some weeks will see more progress than others. As long as I keep trying, I’ll keep moving forward. Sure, I want success yesterday, but it is worth waiting for.

Are you your own best friend? Please share your tips with this newbie.
