Flash Fiction #30 – Finding Her Human

Thanks for stopping. Another picture…another 100 words.

Yvonne searched the newest members of the offering, she prayed one of them had her mark. She’d only been waiting a couple of decades, but she was desperate to have her own human. She craved the intimacy only he could give her. Nervous energy bounced around the room, she could smell the fear and her own anticipation.

Her gaze landed on a red drip tattoo, her mark. She crossed the room determined to locate the human. She’d found him, at last. He turned as she approached, probably sensing her. His head turned in offering, and in pure glee she bit.

Blurb:

Delilah Steele was living the high life. She had a high-powered job, a man she loved and nothing was holding her back. When her world, and her trust, was irrevocably shattered by the man she loved, Delilah had no choice but to return to the town she grew up in – and couldn’t wait to leave. There she goes to work for Aiden Dean, a handsome heartbreaker who seems to have his eye on Delilah. When Delilah’s long-absent father arrives on the scene, she has to figure out how to cope with his presence and desire to be a part of her life. Now Delilah has to learn how to live – and love – all over again. Will her hard knocks past continue to haunt her, or will Aiden break through her tough exterior and show her that forever can be a good thing?

Advice for the Emerging Author:

I’ve had a different journey into publishing than most authors. After finishing and submitting Delilah’s Passion, I had to wait. There’s nothing to do after hitting send unless you start another project. So I started another project. I did NaNoWriMo – National novel writing month and wrote 14 days of Oh.

That’s when my path shifted. I decided to focus on getting my name out there as many times and ways as I could. I set a goal to submit thirty pieces of writing to publishing houses in 2011. I wrote everything from flash fiction to novellas and I met my goal. Of the thirty pieces I submitted, nine were accepted. I am currently published with six different small presses.

I learned more in twelve months of submitting that I would have learned in five years of writing and submitting novels. Why? Because I did it thirty times.

My favorite piece of writing advice changes depending on what I’m working on, but I think that in general, the most important thing for a newbie author to learn is how to accept and apply constructive criticism.

The key, I think, is to use only a beta or pre-reader whom you trust implicitly. That way, when you’re reading their edits and suggestions, you know they’re raising valid concerns. You trusted their opinion enough to let them read your MS and you need to remind yourself of that when your instinct is to curl up and protect your story.

There is validity in every concern brought up by a pre-reader and you have to learn to separate your feelings about the story from the editing process. Once you do that, you’re golden.

Excerpt:

Delilah took her time, enjoying a few more minutes in the fresh
powder. When she finally made her way inside, Aiden was already
sitting on the couch in his flannel pajama pants and a University of
Minnesota sweatshirt, drinking a cup of hot cocoa. He nodded toward
the end table where she saw a second cup of cocoa, presumably
intended for her.
She peeled off her soggy gloves and hat, dropping them to the tile
floor. Kicking futilely at her boots, she tried to pry them off her feet.
“I need dry jeans before the cocoa is going to do me any good.” She
laughed and hopped around the entry, trying to get her boots off.
The dryer buzzed. “That would be your fleece pants. Cozy and
warm from the dryer.”
“Ooh.” She moaned excitedly as she ran into the laundry room
behind the staircase. Delilah shucked her wet jeans and underwear
and threw them in the laundry tub, stepping into warm, fuzzy, fleecy
bliss. She walked back out to the couch and Aiden, rolling her
shoulders and snuggling into her warm pants.
“The only thing that could make this more perfect would be my
slipper boots and a roaring fire.” She curled up on the couch opposite
him.
Aiden pulled her slippers out from behind his back, handing them
over with one hand while the other picked up a remote from the arm
of the couch and clicked a button.
The fire in the gas fireplace roared to life and Delilah threw her
head back and laughed.
“I guess you think you know me well, or something like that?
Hmm?” she winked. “You are too damn funny.”
“I think I know you about as well as any two people can possibly
know each other after seven short weeks.” Aiden tapped his long
fingers on his chin, pretending to be deep in contemplation.
“Short, hmm?” Delilah teased. “They’ve seemed pretty long to me.
So long that it seemed like they dragged, actually.”
Aiden scowled at her, crossing his arms and feigning offense.
She liked the way his nose crinkled up and his heavy brows drew
together, but she loved the way the muscles in his arms drew his shirt
tightly against him as he moved.
“Are you insinuating that I am less than exemplary company?
Because I have it on good authority that I am exceptionally
entertaining. And I have a nice tush.” He winked at her.
“I guess if you call being sold into slave labor entertaining, then
sure, I’m thoroughly entertained.” Delilah shifted on the couch,
turning so her back was against the armrest and tucked her legs
beneath herself.
“You sold your own soul, woman. That had nothing to do with
me,” he argued jokingly.
“You bought it.”
“See, merely a business transaction.” Delilah pulled on her slippers
and swatted Aiden lightly on the shoulder.

Author Bio:

Sarah is a small town Minnesota girl who calls pop by its proper name – pop. She wrote her first novel when she was fourteen; it may or may not have been up to industry standards. She now writes both novels and short stories in the romance, mystery/suspense, paranormal and erotica genres.

She loves traveling anywhere south of the equator and finds that a nice dark microbrew can help get the creative juices flowing. When she’s not writing or traveling, you can find Sarah with her nose buried in a book. Sarah lives in the small town she grew up in with her husband, three children, her cat and her dog.

Tantalizing Tuesday #3 – Time to Dance

Tuesdays aren’t for flashing…they’re for teasing. The rules of TT: I select the picture and 200 words to tease.

photo credit: zilverbat. via photo pin cc

Maria’s thoughts were captured by the unfairness. She was in this beautiful city with Tony, the only man she ever loved, the one man she knew would never love her. He may be her partner in the company and feel like her match in every way, but he’d made his rules clear on her first day. He didn’t mix business with pleasure.

Today like any other day they practiced in the streets before their next performance. His arm wrapped around her and pulled her close as she wrapped her leg over his. She stared into his dark eyes and sunk into lust filled thoughts. The seconds ticked by and he didn’t push her out of the hold, his strong grip demanded she stay.

“Maria, you could sell out this show with just that look in your eyes.” He lowered his head, just enough to snuggle.

“It’s an act, that’s all.”

“That can’t be true, Maria. I feel your body awaken each time I touch you and it pulls on me. My need for you makes me regret those stupid rules. Please tell me it’s not an act.”

“Oh, Tony—“

His mouth pressed into hers and desire swept them away.

Shelia looked out over the horizon, just like her mother and grandmother, she searched for the light. Twenty years ago the light grew bright and brought news of their missing countrymen. She dreamed this would be the day they would finally come. She dreamed this would be the day she would meet the man destined to love her. Her soul ached to know his touch. She shook off the nervous energy tingling along her skin and assumed her position of strength. Today would be the day, she could feel it. She lifted her head, searched the horizon and found…the light.

Flash Fiction #28 – Release the Tension

Jessica made her way onto the dance floor. Nothing she tried worked, Chad continued to pay her zero attention. She tugged at her resilience and began releasing the tension. The heavy beat of the music entered her body and she shook out the last bits of ugliness. Maybe she tried too hard, maybe she should give up her crush. Her heart ached with the thought and she let it disappear through the rocking bodies around her.

A strong hand caressed her hip and lips tingled her ear.

“I’ve missed you, Jessica.”

Chad’s arm wrapped around her and pulled her close.

Flash Fiction #27 – Always waiting

Her plan unraveled into a terrible mess. She played all she had and she couldn’t delay Mark anymore. His musk and charm confused her, he wasn’t the one she desired. His strong arms braced around her, trapping her in a puzzle she didn’t want to solve.

“I didn’t think you’d ever see through James, I’m glad I was wrong.” Mark kissed her neck.

She did see through James, but she didn’t want to give him up. Make him jealous, yes. Mark kissed her again. Pleasure spiked through her body and begged for her attention.

She looked back, waiting for James.

BLURB:

RED TAIL HEARTis a sweeping romance for a new generation, telling a story of faith, family, hope, hardship, and most importantly, love, all through one man’s immense struggle to reunite with his soul mate. The book will take the reader on an emotional roller coaster, but will ultimately leave him with the same faith in and hope for love that Chris regains by the end of the novel.

 EXCERPT:

“Game 3 series of the World: Yankees of New York 6, Cardinals of St. Louis, 2, no one ran home. Game 4 of the Series of the World: Yankees of New York 2, Cardinals of St. Louis 1, no one ran home,” Marie read.

I awoke from my long dream to a woman’s soft, gentle hand stroking my face. The warmth emanating from her hand against my anguished face brought more pleasure to me than I’d ever experienced. I felt wanted, watched over, cared for and loved for the first time in a very long time in my brief passage from the world of dreams back to consequential reality. I opened my eyes and stared into the tear-filled blue eyes of my French caretaker, Marie. Her long, flowing, black hair fell across her shoulders and hung just above me. Again I inhaled the scent of wild Oklahoma honeysuckle about her, one of my pleasant memories of home.

I looked at her with everything that made me who I was. My natural eyes saw a woman underdressed due to the harshness of war, barely fed, and tired from a long struggle against her nation’s invaders and against men who would invade her. The eyes of my heart, however, saw a soul mate, the other half of my unfinished self and every reason in the world to cling to life.

“I thought… I was losing…you,” Marie said in halting English.

“I have lost myself. Please help me find my way back,” I responded in a barely audible whisper. “Who won the series?” I asked.

She fumbled through some handwritten notes. “Game 5 of the Series of the World: Yankees of New York 2 and Cardinals of St. Louis 0. Dickey ran home for Yankee New Yorkers. Yankee New Yorkers are declared champions of the Series of the World!”

Flash Fiction #26 – The beauty or the beast

Thanks for stopping. Another picture…another 100 words.

No tears threatened to spill down her cheeks, the only sign of her restrained fury was the tiny twitch in her eye. The day would have been perfect, everything had been in place. She had it all, the perfect dress, the perfect setting, all their family and friends. Now it was spoiled, now there was no prince charming waiting for her at the end of the aisle.

Anger and revenge pushed through her veins, but she continued to sit and stare at the forest beyond. Her mind wouldn’t let go of all she’d lost when he walked away.

He’d pay.

“You have to help me with the decision, Jeremy.” She tugged on her best friend’s hand pulling him deeper into the store.

“Sure, we’ll use my three-point test.” He pushed his hands into the first mattress kneading the pillow top. “This one feels good in my hands, but after awhile it’ll feel like imitation, kind of like implants.”

“Do all your tests translate through sex?”

“Sara, nothing much matters without sex.” He climbed into the next bed.

She followed him in and ignored the nagging instinct to remain quiet, to remain just friends. “Do your tests not apply to me?”

“I’m not going out with you, so stop asking. And give me back my coffee.”

“Why not? I’m a good looking charming guy with a good job. Let me at least feed you.”

“Cause that’s what every woman wants, to be fed?”

“I can think of a few other things women want.” He peered across the stolen coffee cup to her cleavage.

“You’re a shit, Tim.” She couldn’t help but to laugh with the guy. “It took your dirty mind six-seconds.”

“Nothing of the sort, my mind’s been in the gutter since you bent over to fetch the coffee grinder.”
