ROW80 check-in #22

The 2nd round of 80-days in 2012 is almost done. How did I let so much time slip through my fingers? The project manager in me is telling me to start on lessons learned. Sure I worked my way through my to-do list each week, but I’ve lost sight of the bigger picture. Next round I’m going to need to make longer range plans and create my weekly goals to keep me on schedule. I started my novella towards the end of January and I’m still working on it –>grumpy face. Oh, wait, I have happy news to share!

Just last night I finished the edits I knew I wanted to make. I did one more read through and…sent it to my friend to read. Squee!! But not so fast, loads of tasks got pushed aside this week in order to get my edits done and now there is only one more full week left in this round.

It’s time to dig in and get as much done as we can.

The Goals – week-10 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done
  • Write 2,000 words each week– not done, only 180 words were added, but again countless words were cut. I was in editing hell once again this week.
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– done! I spent 3-days editing this week. I was at my in-laws for 3-days this week too so I’m thrilled I got as much done as I did.
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– no progress this week, total bummer. I still plan on starting a new craft book before this round ends. WEEK-11 PRIORITY
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over and I’ve incorporated what I’ve learned.
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– DONE!!  ~~~happy dance~~~
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit  I was out of town 3-days this week, so my workout schedule got raked over. I kept to my water, sleep and calorie goals, but I only got in 2-workouts. WEEK-11 PRIORITY
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Front Kick.  Lift your thigh, tucking your heel in toward your buttocks into Ready Position. Look in the direction you intend to kick. With your hands at heart level and your palms flexed, kick your foot out and to the front. IMPORTANT TIP: Push down into the earth with the supporting foot, and use your hands and arms to maintain vertical alignment and balance. Keep your supporting leg unlocked and spring loaded. Benefits: builds balance, coordination, confidence, and strength.
  • Finish the. Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– No progress this week, total bummer WEEK-11 PRIORITY
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– I’m going to need to do 4-hours a week of education all summer long to get it all done before my certification comes up for renewal. I’ve known this was coming and I’m not looking forward to it. I’ll start my training this week. WEEK-11 PRIORITY

Lots of good and lots of bad. I’ll keep moving forward. I would be pleased to see my movement go a bit faster though. But nothing really should get me down this week. I got my WIP off to my CP!!

ROW80 check-in #21

Since I joined ROW80 at the beginning of this year I’ve been working on my schedule or more succinctly, not getting distracted. There are so many distractions, some good, some necessary, and some should be warded against. I’m glad I’ve been working on this since my schedule is about to get frickin chaotic. The first thought: it will be impossible to do it all, there’s no way. But what would I cut from the schedule. There will be no more time spent going down that rabbit hole. Sometimes super busy can be a good thing. Since I don’t want to lose my mind, I will need to stay on point and keep distractions in their place. As soon as I started thinking: I can do this…the dark clouds broke up. But now I got to get busy putting my plans together or else these check-ins are going to get ugly.
It’s time to cut the fat and let priorities reign.

The Goals – week-9 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done
  • Write 2,000 words each week– not done, only 964 words were added, but countless words were cut. I was in editing hell this week. Plotting for the next two MS has begun, so no more excuses WEEK-10 PRIORITY
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– done! I spent 5-days editing this week, but it’s still not ready to send to my friend. I want it sent by the end of next week. WEEK-10 PRIORITY
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– spent more time here again this week, but I’m not done yet
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over. I keep revisiting my notes though
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– The above says 5-days spent editing, but on each of those days I could have done more. Until yesterday, during each editing session I let ugly thoughts bog me down. How many stages of editing grief are there?
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit I got just under 200-minutes this week and everything else was good…almost done.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Fast Clock.  Begin by marching in place in the center of an imaginary clock on the floor. Use the clock like a map. Step out to a number on the clock and immediately to a new number. For example: step in the center of your clock > step forward to 12:00 >step back to 6:00 > step to the side to either 3:00 or 9:00 > step back to the center. Gradually increase your speed and keep your shoulders and arms relaxed. Benefits: improves stamina, agility, coordination, and the ability to move and breathe faster
  • Finish the. Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– My mirror notes are looking good. It’s time to finish the bars for the last couple of songs in the routine.
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– Two weeks ago I made big progress here and these last two weeks nothing. However, I’m going to sacrifice this task again this week in an attempt to make a final push on the WIP

ROW80 check-in #20

Tomorrow is Memorial Day. How and who will you be remembering? I have plans to spend some time honoring my grandparents that have passed away. I’ll be having some of their favorite meals and snacks, telling stories to my sons who never met them because they passed away too soon, and I also plan to pull out some old photo albums to gaze upon their sweet faces. What ever you have planned I hope you are able to take a moment and enjoy the day.

The Goals – week-8 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done
  • Write 2,000 words each week– not done, again, but much improved over last week 1406-words. WEEK-9 PRIORITY
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– done. My WIP is now over the 25,000 word mark, yahoo, but I still have a couple more scenes to tweak before I give it one more read through and ship it over to my friend. WEEK-9 PRIORITY
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– spent more time here than last week, but I’m not done yet
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over. I think it’s time to revisit a couple of the workshop sections to make sure I’m still working some of the skills correctly WEEK-9 PRIORITY
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– I’m getting really close now, it is entirely possible that next week this will say done
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit I got over 200-minutes this week and everything else was good…done.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Slow Clock.  Begin by marching in place in the center of an imaginary clock on the floor. ROW80 check-in #19

When stress and doubt fill you up where do you turn? Do you escape into a good book, call a friend, or maybe watch those around you for a new idea? For the past 7-weeks I’ve been wittling away at my to-do list, making progress, and forgetting to have fun.

I need balance.

Not a break, not a complete retooling, just a little balance. Life can’t be all about work and study.

This week I’m going to continue working on the list below, but each day I’m going to make a concerted effort to break up the stress in an effort to find balance.

The Goals – week-7 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done
  • Write 2,000 words each week– not done, added 486-words, maybe it’s because of the next line or maybe it’s because of what I mentioned in the opening. Regardless, writing makes me happy. WEEK-8 PRIORITY
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– I edited 4-days this week
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– when in doubt read craft books. Finally I got back to this book, only took 8-weeks to do it, but timing can be an interesting thing.
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over. I did put some of my new skills to work this week while reading my friends draft, yeah.
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– I’m a smidge closer than last week
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit 190-minutes this week and everything else was pretty good, I’m going to consider this really close to done.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Cha-Cha-Cha.  In place, step left-right-left, then right-left-right, in a one-two-three count. Keep your feet close to the ground. Feel free to use your hands and arms to express yourself. Find your own rhythm and play with speed. Benefits: helps develop speed and coordination.
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– I created more enlarged simplified notes to hang on the mirrors this week. Eek, only a few weeks left of this round. I better get a move on.
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– I made progress here. I know, shocking. I finally logged into the PMI database and entered the credits I’ve already earned. I also looked up the courses I’m going to take over the summer. I still have a few more credits to plan for, but I’m about ready to get started. Thank goodness!

Priorities this week: balance, writing, editing, fun, Sanjana movements and balance

Yesterday I posted links to some of my favorite writing links of the week. I left one out, so I’m linking it here today. Jennifer Crusie posted on the 16th The Telling and the Tale, an interesting conversation between her and Krissie about story telling and story. It’s a must read.

Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you, Ann Jarvis & Anna Jarvis for all you did in your days. According to Wikipedia, during the American Civil War Ann organized women to tend to the needs of the wounded of both sides of the war conflict. Ann went on to organize Mothers’ Day Work Clubs in five cities near their home in what is now West Virginia to improve sanitary and health conditions.

Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis died in Philadelphia in 1905. In 1907, Jarvis’ daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis, passed out 500 white carnations at her mother’s church, one for each mother in the congregation. The following year, she held a memorial to her mother and then embarked upon a campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday, a goal which was achieved when President Woodrow Wilson declared it so in 1914.

Apparently it isn’t just Hallmark commercials that make me cry this time of year. I linked up their current tear jerker below, just in case you missed it. Jenny Hansen explained in a post this past week why I have so many problems with mom, but I still love her with ALL my heart. I’ll see my mom today during our weekly Skype session and then I plan to spend my mother’s day reading and writing. We’ll see how the hubs does in wrangling those kids all day.

  • Write 2,000 words each week– I added 2,046 words, plus I deleted a ton (unneeded words/notes for scenes that I no longer need, because they’re written…plus check out the next line.
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– I edited 3-days this week
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– made no progress again, WK 7 PRIORITY<–I’m serious this time. My fingers are crossed for week 7, because I’ll be editing a lot this week and doing a good bit of plot review. My current craft book is James Scott Bell’s Plot & Structure.
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over and I put more of my new skills to work this week…still more to review here.
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– getting closer, no prediction yet though
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit Got only 135 minutes again this week and everything else was good. Somehow in the last week I got back to 0.5 pounds to goal. I think we can all agree that our bodies work in strange and mysterious ways.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Lateral Traveling.  Begin in Closed Stance. 3-Steps: side, together, side. Keep your knees spring-loaded, shoulders relaxed, and your spine vertical. Place your foot directly down on the earth. Plant your foot firmly. Sink & rise. Work with various speeds to develop power and agility. Benefits: improves your ability to move from left to right in a relaxed way.
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– Last week I mentioned that I quit my old route to getting this task done. This week I started creating enlarged simplified notes of each song and I taped them up on the ginormous mirrors in my workout room. Now as I’m going along I can see my notes and I keep going.  So simple, but effective. Yeah, for moving forward on this goal.
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– no progress and I’m ok with that…as long as I start participating by the end of the round.

My word count from last week did not stay with me this week, but this week was totally different. I actually got to the point in the book where I had to go back and reread everything to ensure my scene and character arc charts were up to date. Good News: I was able to write the scene in the middle that I had trouble with the first time through. Bad News: I found an important scene that had a bad case of the head hops. It took me most of Saturday, but I was able to fix it. Yeah. Okay, enough procrastinating and trying to convince you I was productive this week…

The Goals – week-5 results

  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– I edited 5-days this week! Oh yeah!!

  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over and I put some of my new skills to work this week during my read through. Nice!
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– I can sense it is going to happen this round…that counts for something, no?
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit I slipped down to 135 minutes this week, not terrible, not going to get me to goal weight though either.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Traveling in Directions. Move through the room and consciously change directions every few paces. As you change direction, move the position of your entire body at once. Think about the move before you make it, to heighten your brain-body hook-up. Lead each change of direction with your eyes. Benefits: Practicing traveling in directions keeps your body agile for moving through space with ease.
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– I’ve been struggling on this one lately. Basically,  I’m trying to remember an hours worth of choreography with movement cues and such. Instead of trying to make it work…I’m quitting…once that decision was made an interesting idea came to mind. I’m going to try it out this week and I’ll let you know how it goes.

ROW80 check-in #16

Can you say break through? It seems like forever that I’ve been tweaking my balance, organization, focus, and getting the hard stuff done first and finally this week it feels like I’m getting some where. There is still room for improvement of course. But wait till you see my word count this week, that alone makes me smile and I got several other things done this week too. Check out my list below and there is music at the bottom that you don’t want to miss.

The Goals – week-4 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done
  • Write 2,000 words each week– not only did I get 2,000 this week, but when I combine this weeks total with last weeks sad total I get over 4,954 words! Oh yeah, this week brought out 3,708 words and I’m into Act III in the novella WIP 😀
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– just barely done
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– made no progress again, WK 5 PRIORITY
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is over and I’m still in review mode.
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– gave my friend the heads up that I’m working to have something to her soon. This is a Round 2 goal and I don’t want to wait till the end of the round before I send her the first 2 chapters.
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit I got them all again this week. with an extra 45 minutes of exercise too, score.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Cross Behind. Start in Open Stance. Step back and onto the ball of your left foot, crossing your ankles as if making a small “x.” Keep your back heel high. Alternate sides. Repeat, but this time rise up onto the balls of both feet when you cross behind. Keep the “x” small by keeping both feet under your hips. Use the strength of your feet to rise up, keep your shoulders relaxed, your arms hanging freely, and exhale as you rise. Benefits: develops mobility and stability in your legs, which helps you move more efficiently.
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– I revisited the Sanjana bars this week too. Two weeks in a row! Man it’s getting crazy around here.

ROW80 check-in #15

This week I tried out a new strategy: get the hard stuff done first. It worked fantastic! I got some stuff on my list done that I have not yet this round, plus a few things not on the goal list, score! However, some of the easier stuff on my list became harder to get too. I guess there really are only 24-hours in a day. Did I learn something from the experience? Yes! I CAN get the hard stuff done, but in the end I still need balance. I still need to work on my focus and cut the crap out of my week.

  • Write 2,000 words each week– 1246, bummer, WK 4 PRIORITY
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– done!

  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is almost over and the day it ends I’m going to revisit each lesson in an effort to make sure it all sinks in.
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– maybe after I finish reviewing my workshop notes I’ll be able to push this goal out.
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit I got them all this week! Finally!
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers)Cross Front. Start in Open Stance. Step out diagonally and face the corner, pointing both feet in the direction you want to go. Let your arms and hands swing freely. Benefits: strengthens your inner thigh muscles, which helps you develop greater stability when stopping suddenly.
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– I revisited the Sanjana bars this week, yeah! Would love to see progress on this goal two weeks in a row. WK 4 PRIORITY
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– no progress and I’m ok with that…as long as I start participating by the end of the round.

More progress, but still more room for improvement. This week I’m NOT going to shy away from the hard stuff AND I’m going to work on my focus. It’s time to hit a groove and really start moving forward. Have a great week everyone.

ROW80 check-in #14

Last week I identified a problem: my focus. This week I poked and prodded my focus and it’s getting better. However, it has become obvious that my focus will remain a nagging trigger ready to throw me off track, IF I let it. Kristen Lamb’s post this week, Stress Less, Write More, came at a perfect time for me.

There are items on my list that give me more problems than others. So, here is my new approach. Problem items will be given a priority of early in the day or early in the week. The approach is certainly worth a try. Who knows how my day or week could open up if I get the hard stuff out of the way FIRST.

The Goals – week-2 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters- done
  • Write 2,000 words each week– done! 2,054 :)
  • Spend time editing at least 2-times each week– I didn’t edit at all this week! Total bummer because that means I’m falling behind in my workshop assignments. WK 3 PRIORITY
  • Finish reading current craft book and start another– made no progress again, WK 3 PRIORITY
  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop is 1/2 over. I’ve already learned quite a bit and I am looking forward to the topics up next. I have been studying each lesson, but I have a backlog of assignments to finish.
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– not going to make progress here if I don’t spend time editing.
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit I got all but one again this week. Daily water intake has been spot on, hopefully it will flush away some bad restaurant choices, but I did get plenty of sleep this week and I nailed my workout minutes, 200!
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers): Sink and Pivot Table Wipe. Start in “A” stance. Make a quarter turn to the right, bending at the knees and sinking slightly. Pick up your left foot, pivot your left thigh as you place the ball of your left foot on the ground. At the same time, use your left hand to wipe off an imaginary table, moving your hand from back to front. Keep your shoulders and the unused arm relaxed. Alternate sides. Benefits: keeps the feet, ankles, knees, and hip joints agile and the upper body mobile.
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– I made no progress again this week WK 3 PRIORITY
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– no progress and I’m ok with that…as long as I start participating by the end of the round.

More progress, but still room for improvement. I’m stressing a little and I’m searching for my groove. Specifically I want the week to not feel so hard, but I have a plan for that. I’ll let you know next week what happens.

Not sure about the following, but I am curious about how future technology will help ease our stress

ROW80 check-in #13

Another week has said bye, bye. My time management skills are improving, but there are still areas for improvement. A zillion things need to get done everyday and on top we heap on the goals. Is it all a recipe for trouble and stress? Nope, recipe to keep adjusting until we figure it out. If my goals have any hope of completion, I’m going to need to train like an athlete. No, I’m not talking physical fitness. I’m talking about keeping my eye on the ball. Distraction is an evil word and there are many we battle with daily.

In the last few weeks I’ve been taking different approaches to my time management. I seem to be having some success with a certain theory: get a little done all day long. I do a little here…stop…do a littler over there…stop… I think this is working for me, because when I start a new task I’m staying focused. As soon as my focus lapses I get sucked into things that I should not get sucked into. There are not enough hours in a day, but there are 24, and I want to make sure I’m using them wisely.

My problem: it’s easy to get off track, but here is where the training comes in and I will try, try, try again. I’m hoping my goals will get easier over the course of this round. It will be interesting to see how my training goes. How did I do this week? Let’s take a look see

  • Participate in Before You Hit Send Self-Editing Workshop in April– the workshop started this week and so far I’m lovin it!!
  • Turn 2nd-draft chapters to my writer friend for her critique– I did get some editing done this week, but there is much more to do before the 2nd draft is ready. I’m hoping to have a several chapters to her by the end of this round.
  • Workout a minimum of 200-minutes a week and round it out with plenty of water, sleep and my calorie limit- I got all but one this week. Daily water intake has been spot on, which always helps with the calorie limit and I did get plenty of sleep this week. Unfortunately I fell short on the workout minutes, only getting 160.
  • Study one of the Nia 52-moves each week (the 52-moves is like the ballet bar for Nia lovers): Stepping back onto the ball of your foot: start in Open Stance and keep your head, chest, and pelvis upright. Step directly onto the ball of one foot and keep the heel high. Practice walking around the room, stop, step back onto the ball of your foot. Benefits: improves mobility and stability in the foot and ankle, which helps you move with precision and sensitivity
  • Finish the Sanjana bars and start the Opal bars (i.e. studying the song/movement structure)– I made no progress this week 😦
  • Listen to the Nia sound track for the Sanjana routine each week and add Opal when I get to their bars– done
  • Plan out and start participating in the last of my needed continuing education credits for PMP certification– no progress

Progress, but lots of room for improvement. This week I’m going to concentrate on recognizing my lack of focus and attempt to be preemptive and save some time in the process. I am off and running, which is a good place to start, and did you see I made my word goal!!

I’m going to be gone all day visiting family, but I will be checking up on the other ROW80ers this evening and tomorrow.
