Guest blog: The heartbreak of unrequited love

By Cara Bristol

Have you ever secretly loved someone, but didn’t dare tell him/her?
During my teenage years, I crushed on a number of guys in secret. In a few cases, the infatuation lasted for a couple of years. In a couple instances, we were “just friends,” but I harbored a secret hope. In other cases, I hardly knew the guy, but admired him from afar.

Once, after college, I did put myself out there and asked a guy I liked to lunch. He said yes – then later had his administrative assistant call and cancel. Ouch.

I’m married now, and thankfully, I don’t have to date anymore. Lol.

The heroine of Destiny’s Chance knows the heartbreak of unrequited love. She has crushed on Chance Everett for as long as she’s known him. She has good reason for not opening up about the way she feels, so she has resigned herself to loving him from afar.

And then a tragic accident brings them together and she has the “chance of the lifetime” to make him hers.  But they both harbor secrets that might bring their new relationship to an abrupt end.

Destiny’s Chance Blurb:

Fate gave her a chance for love.  Is she brave enough to accept it?

Destiny Grable has loved Chance Everett for as long as she could remember, but he was never interested in her until a tragic act of fate grants her heart’s desire. Now Chance is all hers—body, mind, and soul. But once they’re together, she discovers he has a kinky side she never knew about. Is she ready for it? Can she handle it? And Chance isn’t the only one with a secret. If he discovers what she’s hiding, will he still want her?

Destiny’s Chance was previously published in 2013. This is a re-release.

Destiny spanking graphic

Excerpt:

A silk kimono slithered off a hanger to land on a chest on the floor of the closet. She hung up the robe and eyed the trunk. Made of aged, saddlelike leather, it had thick rawhide handles and brass hardware.

She dropped to her haunches. “Probably locked anyway.”

She pressed the button. The latch popped. She wavered, then surrendered to curiosity and lifted the lid.

“Oh my God!” She clapped a hand over her mouth and fell on her ass. “That’s his kink.” She stared at the treasure trove of spanking implements. Paying attention to how she removed them so she could replace them exactly as she’d found them, she examined the items. Several paddles of different shapes and sizes in both leather and wood. A pom-pom-like flogger with supple soft leather strands and a stiff wooden handle. Some common items: a hairbrush, a wooden spoon, a ruler. And a strop resembling a belt split into two parts. A tawse! She’d heard of them but never had seen one until now.

She smacked her palm with it. Biting. How would it feel against a bare bottom? She pictured herself laid out like an offering over Chance’s lap as he spanked her bottom until it was supersensitive and then stung her cheeks with the tawse.

Her pussy cheered with a twitch.

She fantasized often about being spanked but had no idea if she’d like it if she experienced it. However, she loved leather—appreciated its hard and soft textures, its masculine scent, the snap it made. Such a versatile material. Sensual. Sexy. She stroked the soft strands of the flogger, then whacked her palm with the tawse again.

She sat cross-legged on the floor like a little girl playing with grown-up toys. All she required for some really wicked games was a playmate named Chance.

New Release! Night and Chaos by Naomi Clark

Like the quote says, sometimes you have to write the book you want to read. When I
first came up with the idea for the Deva Chronicles, several years
ago now, I was looking for something in the urban fantasy field that
didn’t revolve around the Big Three – vampires, werewolves, and
witches. I’m not saying it wasn’t already out there. I just couldn’t
find it. I can’t quite remember now where I stumbled across the Hindu
concept of devas and their malevolent brothers, the asuras, but it
was just too great a piece of mythology not to write about.

I admit I’ve taken some liberties with the myth, but the basic idea of the nature
spirits, the devas, versus the aggressive asuras is at the core of it
all. With the devas and asuras able to give particular gifts to their
human hosts (like Ryan’s ability to cloak herself in shadows), the
stage is set for supernatural carnage! Hopefully the sneak peek below
gives you an idea of what’s in store in the Deva Chronicles…

Book Description:

Ryan’s past isn’t just haunting her. It’s trying to kill her.
Ryan McCarthy fled Kimberlyn Island, her father, and her lover six years ago, desperate to build a life away from the weird science and supernatural experiments of her childhood. But everything she hoped to escape comes back with a vengeance when she’s kidnapped and tortured by a possessed madman out for revenge on the man responsible for his possession: Ryan’s father.
Now, reunited with the lover she abandoned, Ryan is forced back into a world of danger and darkness she no longer understands, pursued by enemies with powers she can’t fathom. But Ryan’s not entirely powerless herself. She’ll have to use every trick she knows—as well as the mystic gift she hates—to stay ahead of those enemies. And that will be easier said than done.

 Excerpt:

“Ryan! Open the door, Ryan!” Irving shouted. “I’ve got a present for you!”

“Stay here,” Jackson told me, tone allowing no argument. He crept down the hall towards the door, metal hand curled into a fist. Tendrils of red hot energy rolled off him, his deva preparing for battle. My own deva, long suppressed, stirred sluggishly within me, its energy cool and dark.

My body remembered too well how to use its power now. Shapeshifting earlier had woken the old skills, and it was almost painless now for me to tug at the shadows in the kitchen and wrap them around me so I disappeared. Jackson looked back at me and started. “Ryan?” he whispered.

“Get the door,” I shot back, my voice sounding disembodied and tinny.

Irving was still hammering, screaming my name. I imagined the asura inside him spurring him on, urging him to violence. To kill and torture and maim. I watched Jackson’s back as he stole towards the door, thought of the chaos deva inside him, and wondered how different the two entities really were. Devas were supposed to be the good to the asuras’ evil, but that was a human idea, wasn’t it? Morality, right and wrong…What did those things have to do with supernatural beings?

Jackson reached the door just as the wood split, a long pale crack appearing in the varnished oak. I trembled at the strength that must have taken. I’d been lucky earlier to escape Irving with relative ease and only a few scars to show for it. He could have snapped me in half.

Jackson grasped the door handle and wrenched the door open. Metal shrieked as locks and bolts snapped. Wood flew from the frame in splinters and chips. Amber light flooded the hall from the street lamp outside, gleaming off his metal hand and bathing Irving a sickly yellow color. He clasped a knife in one hand.

Irving stumbled back at the sight of Jackson in the doorway, his crazed eyes wide. There was a split second where neither man moved, then they exploded into action. Irving screamed and threw himself at Jackson, blade flashing as he struck.

About the Author:

Naomi likes writing, perfume, fancy tea, and unfathomable monsters from the dark spaces between the stars, not necessarily in that order. She has been writing stories ever since she learned how to write, but is still trying to master the art of biography writing. When she’s not dealing with werewolves, demons, or sea monsters, she’s hanging out with her cat and probably watching a documentary about Bigfoot. If the cat isn’t available, she’s with her fiancé watching cookery shows and silently plotting her next book.

About the book

~Editor’s Pick~

epeditorsesal1s

For the first time in her life, Vivian Duffy is pushing herself to the limits of her abilities. With people dying in her city she seems to be the only one willing to dig for the answers when the evidence isn’t making any sense. But when her sister fits the profile of the killer’s victims, Viv knows she may need to make some hard choices.

Jason has walked the Earth for more years than he cares to remember. Always with the singular goal of ensuring the safety of all the humans around him. Meeting the woman who was meant to be his was never even a consideration for him, not until Vivian crosses paths with him at the scene of a murder.

The danger is growing around them, and with the fate of his woman on the line this Argonaut will do whatever is needed to keep her protected.

This is a previously published work. It has been revised and edited for Evernight Publishing

Excerpt – G Rated –

Dropping his carry-on at his feet, Jason stretched his arms over his head. The flight into Seattle had been damn long. They’d had to make an impromptu landing when one of the passengers had gotten out of hand. Then there was a wait while the local police had pried him and his pissed off wife from the plane.

There’d been further delay when a storm had blown in, leaving them sitting on a runway for another three hours. Finally, they’d made it into the air during a break in the squall and were back on their way.

It had been a very long day in the air and on the ground. He was where he needed to be, though. Now all he had to do was find James so they could get their behinds moving. Which, knowing the cowboy as he did, the other man would likely be in the nearest bar. Grabbing his bag, he scoped out the area and spotted the one that would call to the Wild West gunman.

Too easy. Rolling his eyes, Jason slung the duffel over his shoulder and made his way to the tavern. Inside, he spotted James easily. The man was holding court with a gaggle of women, who were all drooling over his authentic accent. Why Mercury had thought putting the two of them together on a mission was a good idea, he’d never figure out.

Reaching the table, he dropped his luggage again. “James.”

“Jason!” James popped to his feet and came around to hug Jason, pounding his back. “Good of you to join us. Ladies, this is Jason. Jase, these are the ladies. They’ve been keeping me company while I waited for your flight. I heard ya’ll had a bit of trouble, got stuck through a bit of a storm. Bad luck, that.”

“Yeah, to say the least.” Jason gave a slight bow to the women. “Which means we really should get going, James. We have a job to do, and I’m sure you’ve had more than your fair share of drinking already today.”

“Right, true enough,” James said with a nod. “Sorry, ladies, but the man has a point. So, if ya’ll want to give me your numbers, I’ll call each and every one of ya’ll as soon as I can.” He leaned over and grinned at a blonde. “Especially you, sugar.” He handed off his phone and collected from all six.

When he had gotten his cell back, plus a few kisses, they paid his tab and went to collect the rental car. Passing James the folder from Mercury, Jason settled behind the wheel and got them moving.

“Shit, this here’s rather thin,” James said.

“I know. There’s not a lot to go on. A few really old cases that may or may not be related, and then the two newest ones. I don’t have a clue if this is anything more than a wild goose chase.”

“Damn,” James breathed. “Well, I guess all we can really do is check them out and see if it was human killings, or if it was more. Really wish these assholes would leave us calling cards. Be so much easier in the long run.”

“Yeah, just what we need. The evil ones leaving calling cards at their murders. Then we’d have the feds on each of the cases, looking for a serial killer that apparently hops from one end of the country to the other and back again. Somehow, I don’t see that as something that would work out well for us.”

“No, I guess not,” James muttered. “So, which one do we want to look at first?”

“Given where we are, we’ll look at the scene that was out north of Jefferson Park Golf Club. It’s the closest,” Jason answered. “After that, we’ll head to the one that happened in the Lower Queen Anne district. I doubt there will be much left after all this time, but you never know.” They could get lucky, though he didn’t hold out much hope for that. It hadn’t done him a lot of good over the years.

Twenty minutes later, they were studying the scene a block north and slightly east of the golf club. As he’d surmised, there wasn’t a lot left beyond some scraggly pieces of police tape and stains on the concrete.

But Jason wasn’t really interested in the scene itself. It was what was around that counted. Moving to where the body had been found, he turned his back. He wanted to know what the victim, a young woman by the name of Katy, had seen in her last moments.

It wasn’t a horrible area, not by a long shot. A little wear and tear, but nothing that jumped out and screamed “worst neighborhood on the planet.” There was some graffiti, but again, nothing that stated they were in gang territory, or a place most folks wouldn’t enter in the middle of the afternoon, let alone after dark.

For all intents and purposes, it was an average area, in an average American city, with nothing to make it stand out. Except for one thing. “We need to get Helen to pull the video feed from the night of the murder.”

“Wouldn’t the police have done that already?” James asked him.

“Possibly, likely even,” Jason said. “They’re not us, though, and they may not see what we will. Most humans don’t want to acknowledge the strange and unusual. Their minds automatically cover it up, and they play it off as a trick of the light, a shadow, or something else that allows them to sleep at night.”

“Good point.” His partner nodded. “Well, we might as well head to the next scene. Maybe there will be video around there, too.”

Jason was hoping so on the drive into Lower Queen Anne. They needed a break on the case, if there really was one. Reaching the corner of West Republican Street and Second Avenue, they found a parking spot. Jason climbed out of the SUV and looked around. Apparently, luck was on their side this time. “We have cameras,” he announced.

James nodded. “So I see. I’ll call Helen and get her to do her thing. Be nice to know if we’re just dealing with a regular old killer or a monster. Not that a regular killer is all that great, but it’s a hell of a lot better than the alternative.”

While James made the call back to the Mountain, Jason headed for the alley between buildings, where the murder had occurred. Ten feet in, he stopped. The police tape that remained was in slightly better condition than at the last spot. Turning, he gazed up at the buildings on each side.

A lot of windows, but given what was in each building and the time of night the young man, Vern, had been killed, there wouldn’t have been witnesses. Unfortunately, he didn’t think the video would be all that helpful, either, given where the cameras were located.

Walking back out to the street, he headed for the truck and James. The cowboy was off the phone and lounging back against the bumper, checking out women as they went past.

“Tell me you’re not checking out women on the street?”

“All right, I’ll tell you I’m not checking out women on the street,” James answered. “Even though they are damn fine.” He nodded to another one, receiving a smile in return.

“Anyone ever mention you are—what is that quaint saying? Ah yes … you are a dog,” Jason said.

“Woof.” James grinned at him. “We done here?”

“Yes, there’s nothing to see. We’ll need to hope we get some video. Did you contact Helen?”

“She’ll be pulling it as soon as she can. She said she had to find it first but will call as soon as she has something for us.”

“Good,” Jason said. “We might as well go to our hotel. I doubt we’ll get anything from her today, and I’m starving. They didn’t even have those little pouches of peanuts on the flight.”

“That’s because everyone’s all paranoid by the rise in allergies. They ditched the peanuts off flights, banned peanut butter from schools, and are coddling everyone. Too many people have turned into pansies. It’s deplorable,” James muttered with a sneer.

Jason wasn’t about to argue with him. Climbing into the truck, he put it in gear and got them moving toward their hotel. Food, a shower, and then sleep. In that order.

New Release PLUS an Interview! Black Dawn by Rose Wulf @RoseWulfAuthor

Please help me welcome Rose Wulf to my ehome! ❤ She’s one of my author sisters from Evernight Publishing and she’s agreed to answer a few questions. Woot! Also, I have all the details on the first book in her Dark Light Series. 😀 Enjoy!

How long have you been writing?

My whole life. Seriously. I cannot remember a time when writing wasn’t fun for me, or something I didn’t at least do on occasion. Early on one of my teachers told my mom I had a great imagination and talent in writing, and that praise has stuck with me.

Can you tell us about some of the challenges or tough decisions you’ve had to make in publishing your books?

Probably the biggest challenge I’ve faced thus far, aside from the constant challenge of promo, was having my first completed series pulled from publication without warning. I was devastated and furious and felt very defeated, but my fabulous friends – both in real life and online – helped pull me through. I decided to revise and resubmit the series to my new publisher, Evernight Publishing, and now the first book in the series is under contract for release within the month!

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

Dedication is first. No writer is amazing the first time they pick up a pencil or tap at the keyboard, but if they’re dedicated to their craft they will improve. Everything is second to that in my opinion, but a close second would be passion. When a writer is passionate about the story they’re telling it will absolutely come through!

What are you reading now?

Right now I am reading By the Light of the Moon by Jodi Vaughn. It’s a werewolf-style paranormal romance because, hey, I love what I write so I read the genre, too! And Ms. Vaughn is doing a very good job so far!

What turns you on creatively?

Oh man. Everything. Anything. Seriously. But in most recent memory it was a picture. A beautiful piece of art shared on Facebook that just set my creativity on fire! Consequently the book most directly impacted by this creativity is already completed and in my publisher’s hands!

Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.

Well, my newest release is Black Dawn (Dark Light 1), a story about a protective Alpha demon named Darr and the woman he fights for, Izzy. But that part’s in the blurb. What I don’t mention is that Darr’s been lying to Izzy her whole life and the reason why involves a dangerous demon – a demon who’s finally found them and will stop at nothing to take Darr’s head as a trophy.

Tell us a bit about the projects you are working on now?

I’m working on a few things. I have a frequently back-burnered project I need to finish for a more out of this world romance. I also have ideas for the next two or three books in the Dark Light series that need my attention. As well as continuing to revise the later books in that previously published series I mentioned!

Black Dawn - Final

Product Description

Dark Light, 1

Demons are real, and they walk among us…

Isolde Duchane grew up with a demon for a bodyguard. But as she’s matured, so have her preferences. And she’s got a thing for tall, strong, dark, and powerful demonic men. Really just one very specific demonic man. It’s too bad his life is bound to hers, putting her in a terribly awkward spot since what she wants is something more than a bodyguard.

Darr was summoned to protect Izzy when she was young. And he played the part to keep his own personal demons off his back. But things are starting to get out of hand, and not just because of his powerful attraction to the woman she’s become. The demon he’s been hiding from may have found him, and if he has…he may never get to tell Izzy the truth.

Black Dawn - 3D4

Excerpt:

She lifted her eyes to the darkest corner of the cabin—the corner beside her chosen bed, of course—just as Darr stepped into view.

“Izzy,” he called in his deep, rough timbre.

Ainsley and Britt’s cousin both cried out in surprise and even Britt and Letty jumped.

“Is that—?” Ainsley whispered with a glance toward Britt.

“Izzy!” Britt cried, a mixture of fright and frustration in her voice. She really did hate being around him.

Izzy apologized and waved her hand in their direction to pacify them as she moved up to her bodyguard. “What is it?” She knew for a fact he’d have continued hiding in shadowy corners silently if there wasn’t something important on his mind.

“Not here,” he said quietly, his voice sending delightful shivers down her spine. He reached out without another word, and wrapped a single arm around her waist before stepping back with her into the shadows. Izzy closed her eyes to minimize the disorientation as he transported them to a private location, her hands twisted in his tight, black shirt.

A moment later the sensation of movement faded and his grip loosened, though he made no move to step back until she released his shirt.

Lifting her gaze to his ashen one, Izzy repeated her earlier question. “What is it, Darr? Is something wrong?” She thought she’d seen Zahk with him earlier, but she thought nothing of it—Zahk was known to show up randomly from time to time. Had it not been a pleasant visit? Or was this something else?

Darr’s expression was somber. “I’m worried there will be an attempt on your father’s life tonight.”

Sucking in a breath, Izzy gasped, “What? Why?”

“Zahk was here earlier,” Darr replied. “It was something he said. I think he was trying to warn me.”

Pressing a hand over her heart, Izzy stepped into Darr and rested her head on his chest.Dad… It wouldn’t be the first time he’d angered someone—human or demon—to the point where his life was threatened. The first time he’d crossed that line, her mother had paid the ultimate price, and when he hadn’t learned from that lesson, Izzy eventually came to the conclusion that she needed to distance herself from him. But she still loved him.

Arm coming around her again, this time in an embrace, Darr rumbled a soft question. “What do you want me to do, Izzy?”

Tears stinging her eyes, Izzy swallowed them back and inhaled a deep lungful of his scent. Crisp like mountain air, with just a hint of molasses. “I know you don’t like going,” she acknowledged, “but please don’t let him die. Not like that.”

Darr was silent for a long minute, undoubtedly debating her request with his situation. But finally his hold tightened as he embraced her and his lips came to the side of her ear. “Stay inside, stay safe, and call for me if anything happens. I’ll be back before morning.”

Her heart warmed at the intimate way he held her and the tender tone in his voice. He might be a demon, but as far as she was concerned he was really her guardian angel. Or a knight in shining armor, maybe? “Thank you,” she whispered.

He loosened his hold, nodding when their eyes met, and took her hand in his. The next thing she knew her stomach was bottoming out and her feet were standing once again on an old wooden floor in a dark corner. But Darr wasn’t with her.

Releasing a breath, Izzy wiped her palms on the sides of her jeans and turned to look for her friends just as Letty spoke up.

“Is … everything okay?”

About Rose:

Rose Wulf is a giant romance fangirl. Hot, protective, sometimes even downright barbaric heroes and spitfire heroines are her favorites. Rose has been writing for as long as she can remember, and over the years she’s only grown fonder of it. The bonds between characters have always captivated her, and as an author those are Rose’s favorite things to play with – not always to the relief of her fictional babies!

Behind the scenes Rose is a quiet personality. She enjoys spending her non-writing time with her four year-old German Shepherd, Shadow, her mom, and her friends. Be it a fun game of Cards Against Humanity or a relaxing movie night, Rose believes everything is better with company. As for her own romance, she’s still searching for her hero (and hoping that, when she does find him, he’ll be willing to cook!).

by Libby Bishop

Revenant Investigations Book 2

Blurb:

Empath and paranormal investigator Lena Tompson is enjoying a night of relaxation when she’s interrupted by a phone call from her boss. She hurries to the office, still in her pajamas, and finds herself face to face with the once love-of-her-life.

Knox Trenton, also an empath, has a problem: his beloved great grandmother has accidently conjured the spirit of her dead sister while trying to find the spirit of her dearly departed husband, who died decades earlier. The sisters have fought bitterly since his death.

As the case heats up, so do Lena’s feelings for Knox. She doesn’t know how long she can hold back the tide of emotions, especially when she realizes that Knox has feelings for her as well. She can only hope that trusting him doesn’t tear her apart as deeply as his own family will be torn if they fail to stop the fighting.

Excerpt:

Oh, how Lena Tompson wished she was still at home, curled up on the couch watching Pride and Prejudice—the Colin Firth version, of course—instead of at the Revenant Investigations office for an emergency meeting. But that wish wasn’t going to come true. When her boss, Folger, had called they all knew to come immediately. She had and now Knox Trenton, the former love-of-her-life, sat in her boss’s office with his forehead creased from worry.

“I’m very sorry to drag you all here at this hour,” Knox said. “But there’s an emergency at Trenton House.”

Arabella Pierce—coworker, medium, and Lena’s best friend—spoke up. “What do you mean?” she asked.

Knox rubbed his eyes. Lena could feel just how worried he was. Having grown up with and seriously dated Knox, she knew this wasn’t normal for him. Something had to be dreadfully wrong in order for him to be bleeding emotions so strongly. As a high-level empath, he was very good at guarding himself, unless unduly stressed or tired.

Lena reached out with her own empathic gifts to search his feelings, and a brick wall slammed down.

“Nana has done something,” he replied, dread lightly imbedded in his tone.

Oh, dear. When his great-grandmother did something to earn that tone of voice it normally meant another feud was brewing with someone, probably a family member. The elderly spitfire was too fiery for her own good, at times. “What did Imogene do?”

“You both know the story of my great-grandmother and her twin sister, Ruth.”

“Hard to forget,” Arabella replied.

While the story was well known, not many knew the details as Lena and Arabella did. He’d told them in Junior High. And a hell of a story it was.

He turned to Folger. “I’m going to tell you the story, but I ask that you keep it to yourself, for your records. This is a very sensitive issue.”

Folger raised his hand. “What you tell us goes no further than this room.”

Knox sighed. “Thank you. My great-aunt Ruth conjured my great-grandpa Duke’s spirit when he died of a heart attack in his mid-thirties. She wanted to punish her sister for allowing him into the family and betraying her. Their father trusted Duke and had learned to love him as a son, so he willed Trenton House to Duke and Nana. Ruth was furious with her sister for allowing such a thing, saying she was betrayed, even though their father left her and her husband well over five hundred thousand dollars and the country house at the edge of town.” He paused, sighing. “Most of the family believes her objection was solely about Duke’s name being put on the house. I think it’s safe to say if it had been just Nana’s name on the deed, Ruth wouldn’t have been so vehement about the whole thing.”

Lena had been to that country house a few times—a beautiful home, on a lovely four-acre plot of land. But Duke being willed Trenton House and watching it fall into his hands, even with Imogene there, had only been the beginning––the spark, to ignite the rest of the Trentons’ sisterly feud.

Lena had seen no real ‘ill will’ between Knox and his cousins, but their parents… Well, there was a reason she never liked going to the family get-togethers. Their barely veiled animosity was like ice, cracking against her skin. Knox tried to shield her from most of it, but the intensity was too great for him to block it all. Lena tolerated events the best she could, but finally admitted they’d taken a toll on her, and her view of their relationship.

“And no one knows where Ruth trapped Duke’s spirit,” Arabella said, leaning back against the couch and crossing her legs. “Ruth took that information to the grave.” “Knox,” Folger said, “tell them what Imogene did.”

Hesitation lightly touched the air, held clear in his dark brown eyes when he glanced at her. All thoughts of their past momentarily fled when Lena saw it—something was very wrong, all right, and worry twisted her gut. “Knox?”

He fidgeted in his chair, until he settled for sitting with his back completely straight as if someone had pulled a string upward, and rested his hands on the arms of the chair.

“Nana…raided Ruth’s crypt at our family’s private cemetery and stole a necklace from her coffin.”

Lena’s mouth dropped in shock. “She did what?”

Thank you so much for having me. I hope you enjoy this little snippet of my new holiday release, Donner and Prancer … available now from Evernight Publishing’s Romance on the Go line, just in time for the holidays!

Noah Donner had it all. Good looks, great job, and a kick-ass gift. As a special breed of shifter, every Christmas Eve he assisted Santa as one of his famous reindeer. A lover of all women, he’s the quintessential playboy. But all that changed within weeks of Christmas, when he found himself drawn to another reindeer shifter, Mira Prancer.
Not exactly sleek reindeer material, full-figured Mira took pride in her gift as a shifter, while not nearly as confident about herself when in human form. Usually a timid wallflower, Mira is surprised to learn she’s Noah’s latest target, and after a drunken night of unexpected passion, they find themselves in a quandary.
Neither can deny the attraction, but Mira will need more than words to trust the sexy Casanova.
Can the two love-struck shifters play nice? Or will this little Reindeer Game require a little Christmas magic?

Excerpt:

Noah nudged her against the door, closing it behind them.

Mira gasped. His smoldering expression turned her stomach upside down, and heat pooled between her legs. Had he cast a spell, stealing away her ability to escape? Her skin tingled at the thought of giving in to his silent intent.

Noah’s hands found her midsection and needy eyes drank her in as though she were a mug of hot, buttered rum on a cold winter’s night.

I’ve totally lost my mind. “Is this really happening?” Did I say that aloud?

Noah’s eyes gleamed and a mischievous grin spread across his face. “Oh, it’s happening.” He slowly leaned in, and his lips grazed hers, immediately followed by his tongue. Warm swipes plunged deeper with each pass, triggering moisture that dampened her panties.

Mira’s knees buckled and Noah scooped her up into his arms and carried her to the sofa as though she weighed next to nothing.

His kisses grew more passionate. Deeper. Hungrier.

Mira could hardly catch her breath. This was crazy. Insane. “Get the fuck out!”

Noah stopped. A look of confusion and shock flashed in his eyes. “What?”

Mira laughed, covering her mouth as heat rushed to her cheeks. “I’m sorry. That sort of slips out whenever I’m surprised.”

Noah’s brow pinched. “You’re surprised?”

She bit back another laugh and went with an enthusiastic nod instead.

“Why?”

Mira’s head spun and she strained to sit upright. How could she explain this? “Men like you don’t come home with women like me, Noah.”

He shook his head. “Why?”

He sounded like a broken record now.

“Be-because,” she said stammering through her reply. “Look at you.”

Noah rose and stood by the sofa, gazing down at her. “What about me?”

“Uh … well, you’re built like a Greek god and you have a reputation as a …” She searched for the correct words—words that held a little more delicacy than man-whore. “Ladies’ man?”

“Humph.” He rested his hands on his hips. “Ladies’ man, huh?”

“I was being polite.” Mira squirmed.

Noah’s eyebrows arched high. “Is that so?” He folded his arms across his chest. “Why don’t you tell me how you really feel, Mira?”

Bile shot up in the back of her throat as her nervous demeanor morphed into one a little more hostile. “How I really feel?” Dozens of irritating things about the man came to mind. Everything from his obnoxious, too-loud laugh, to the ugly reindeer sweater he wore, to the Christmas party every friggin’ year. “Well … for starters, you brag about your conquests entirely too much.” She’d keep her comments limited to the facts rather than opinions. “You treat women like trophies and well … you seem to have a serious problem with my ass.” The last part flew out of her mouth so fast she had no time to reel it back in.

New Release! The Dukes’ Christmas Abductions by Doris O’Connor and Raven McAllan

Thanks so much for having the lovely Raven and me on your blog today. You know, we often talked about writing a book together, but that’s as far as it went. Then our reader group The RavdorChicks started nagging us—in the nicest possible way of course—that
they would love us to write a story together.

So, after much frantic skype messaging, where we brainstormed ideas, and one very sleepless night from me, when the start of a workable story actually came to me, the idea
was born.

What followed was a fun filled four days with Raven in Scotland, where we put our
heads down, fuelled by wine, chocolate, and Gin&Tonics, and our fingers flew.

We had so much fun writing this story I can say this won’t be our last collaboration.  We hope readers will like The Dukes’ Christmas Abductions as much as we loved writing this story.

Much love from both of us!

Stay naughty now, folks.

Excerpt (18+):

Daniel paused mid swatting the delectable arse in front of him to rub, what must be a considerable ache by now, away. His quarry had stopped screaming for this Vicky, at last, and unless his senses were completely off, she was starting to enjoy his attention. Certainly her breaths were coming in short gasps, and instead of struggling, she was raising her bottom into every carefully placed swat of his hand.

The evening was definitely looking up. As was his cock, which was in danger of splitting his evening breeches.

There was one way to find out for sure. Daniel slipped his fingers under the hideous undergarments, and smirked at the all over body shiver his girl gave. Satisfied with not only her reaction but also by the wet, hair-free cunt he found, he let his digits linger.

“Oh, god.”

Her breathless moan spurred him on, and he grinned when he found her hidden pearl. She shivered again when he circled the tight nub, and Daniel set up lazy circles, designed to drive any woman wild. This chit proved no exception. The air grew heavy with the musk of aroused woman, and Daniel inhaled deeply, before he stopped the movement.

A strangled groan escaped his girl, and he tapped her arse again, when she tried to rub her cunt on his fingers.

“Oh, no, you don’t. I want the truth, starting with your name, and maybe then I’ll let you find release. Only on my say so, though, are we clear here, girl?”

“Fuck, yes … ow.”

Her arse cheeks wobbled most satisfactorily, when he yanked that odd fabric down to her knees, and delivered a few more swats to her delectable arse. The woman had a derriere made for fucking, hips to grab onto while he sunk his cock into her body and claimed what was his. That thought made his head come up. His? He had no business having proprietary thoughts toward a servant like that.

“Fuck, we most certainly will, but not without you telling me who you are, so…” He delivered another open handed swat across both of her arse cheeks this time, and her answering deep throated moan made him go so hard it was a wonder he hadn’t spilled in his breeches yet.

“Clara, Sir. My name is Clara.”

Daniel slid his fingers through her sodden slit, and flicked her nub once, causing her to give another one of those cock hardening moans.

“Very nice, but the correct address would be my lord, chit, would it not?”

A strangled groan was his response this time, and when he withdrew his fingers again, she slumped.

“Sorry, My Lord.

The girl, Clara, he mentally amended, had fire, that was for sure, if the intonation she gave his title was anything to go by. A certain amount of boldness was something Daniel certainly appreciated in his bed partners. If Clara was a lady’s maid, she was wasted in that position. As his mistress, however…  His mood improved dramatically as that thought took hold.

It was Christmas, time to be charitable and all that went with such bounty, and what could be better than elevating this lovely creature from her status of mere servant to his mistress.

Mind thus made up, it was time to taste her nectar and to see if what he was suspecting would be true. That Clara and he would mesh perfectly in the bedroom, and he could let his darker desires shine through.

He indulged himself by sliding several digits through her wet cunt, lubricating them with her juices, before he slipped one finger into her tight channel, and brought his thumb to press against the puckered hole, guarding that entrance.

Clara stiffened slightly, but she didn’t voice any protest, and when he started to thrust the finger in her cunt slowly in and out of her, she gasped. Her hips rose in involuntary jerks, which told him how close she already was to exploding under his ministrations. Her untutored responses made him want to hurry this along, but Daniel was never an inconsiderate lover. He would give her several releases before he claimed his own.

“Good girl, and who do you work for?”

Clara moaned and writhed against him, her internal muscles fluttering around his fingers in rippling moves, which signaled her impending orgasm as clearly as the rosy flush spreading across her skin. So beautifully responsive. She jerked when he tapped her nub, and then withdrew his hand.

“Faversham Estate. Oh god, please, My Lord … I.” The rest of her pretty little plea was lost in a screech as he swung her off his lap and onto his bed.  Her breasts bounced most satisfactorily, and her lovely almond shaped green eyes widened further when he crawled onto the bed with her, and straddled her midriff. Daniel grasped her arms and brought them high above her head. The action made her breasts rise up in silent offering, and Daniel smirked.

“Hmm, that would mean you work for me. How delightful. Whatever position you hold here, I much prefer you in this one, unable to move and at my mercy. I’m going to tie your wrists together and tether you to one of the posts, sweet Clara. Is that acceptable to you?”

Book Excerpt:

Hands on her hips, Arabella Pierce stood scowling at her boss. “I cannot believe you’re making me do this.”

Folger Dade expressed nothing but patience as he leaned forward in his chair and rested his forearms on his small mahogany desk––his normal position when the two of them were headed into an argument. “It’s a business decision that had to be made. I regret doing this to you on short notice, but this is how it is.”

She sat down in the comfy blue wingback chair facing the desk. “I am a paranormal investigator. I see dead people, for goodness sake! And you want me to deal with this, this—”

“Reporter. He’s a reporter for Debunker Media, and he wants to follow you on an investigation, as part of his series of web articles on psychics and ghosts.”

“And you thought it was a good idea to hinder me like that? Don’t you remember what happened with the last two skeptics you had hunt with us?” The memory made her blood boil. Skeptics weren’t meant to go on serious investigations—she’d learned that at an early age.

Sure, organizations like Debunker Media were necessary, to help arm the public against frauds and cheats. Unfortunately, there were plenty of people who were not gifted but wanted to be, as well as quite a few fraudsters out to steal people’s money. Not to mention many individuals who enjoyed making fun of people like her.

She pursed her lips and sat silent as Folger sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Arabella knew she was the only investigator to give him so much grief in all his long years in the business—she was certain she was responsible for the majority of gray hair on his head. But he put up with it from her for a reason, and that was because she was one of his two best mediums.

He dropped his hand and met her eyes. “It’s good press, and it’s one week with a reporter. One week that could boost our caseload and bring in more money so we can continue to do those cases for free. Please, don’t fight me on this one.”

She looked away from his light gray eyes. Revenant Investigations—based in Noble, Maine—did all of their cases for free, getting their money instead from fundraising and private donations. Folger worked very hard to keep it that way. He had always been like a father to her, and she didn’t want to fight with him. Yet she didn’t want a so-called “reporter” hampering her investigation, either.

“Does he know the rules?” she asked, resignation in her tone.

“Yes,” he said with a sigh, and a healthy dose of relief. “And I also informed him of the other skeptics I’ve allowed on hunts, and what I’ll do if he gives you that kind of grief.”

Yeah, doesn’t make up for sending this one along. “And what investigation are we doing? You didn’t say.”

“Kingston Cottage.”

Arabella stared at him, shocked. “Are you serious?”

He nodded. “The owners contacted me last week, and informed me they need to sell the house as soon as possible. They want to put it on the market this month, due to personal reasons. In order to do that they need to know what’s inside and how to get rid of it.”

“No one has ever been allowed to investigate it…” she trailed off in awe.

Folger smiled. “Until now.”

She couldn’t help but return his smile. The feeling of a fresh, no-one-else-has-done-it hunt was too much of a thrill to pass up. Historic Kingston Cottage was located on a small island, all by itself, and had been rumored to be haunted since before Arabella was born. She had seen pictures and taken boat rides past the island, but she’d never set foot on the private property.

“When do we have to be at the docks?” she inquired as she stood, grabbing her coat off the back of the chair.

“Seven o’clock tomorrow morning. Don’t be late. Dustin is taking you over. But, Arabella—” She looked at him, knowing that tone. “It’s just going to be you, the reporter, Nick, and Lena. I need the rest of the crew on a different hunt.”

She paused at the door. Nick was one of their tech guys, and Lena was a lead investigator, like Arabella. Five more investigators rounded off the team. But the more she thought about Folger’s decision to use a small crew, the more it made sense, especially within the limited space of the cottage. “Nick and Lena,” she began, “do they know about the … ‘reporter’?”

Folger rolled his eyes, clearly hearing the quotation marks in her tone.

“Yes. I asked them not to speak of it until I talked to you myself. I think that was best, don’t you?”

Arabella chose to ignore the rolling eyes. “And the reporter?”

“He’ll be there at seven sharp as well. His name’s Lucas Brown, and he’s a serious reporter.”

She nodded slowly, not really believing him. “I’ll check in when we get there.”

“Please do, and be sure to pack extra clothes. You know how storms brew up suddenly here. I don’t want you all stranded without necessities. The owners left you some food. Expect to be on the island at least three days, maybe four. Oh, and there’s also a generator in the basement if you lose power.”

“Good to know, and it was nice of them to leave some food.”

“Yes. They’re good people.”

She found it a bit strange that the crew wasn’t going to meet the owners before the investigation, and stranger still that she had never met them. Noble was a small town along the central Maine coast—it was pretty rare not to put a name to a face.

“Arabella,” Folger called as she left his office. “Try not to push him into the bay.”

Spotlight! The Sea Wife by Naomi Clark (Romance on the Go)

Please help me welcome the lovely Naomi Clark. She’s here to talk about her new release, The Sea Wife. It’s a Romance on the Go! One of my favorite lines at Evernight. ❤ Take it away Naomi. 😀

TheSeaWife-EvernightPublishing-JayAheer2015-3DrenderIt’s probably no secret that I love shapeshifters, but normally I stick with werewolves. What can I say, I’m a traditionalist when it comes to these things! For THE SEA WIFE though, I branched out. It’s impossible to be a fan of folklore and mythology and not know about selkies. There are loads of different stories surrounding these seal shifters, but I think probably the best-known is the idea that, if a man steals a seal-woman’s skin, she’s trapped and forced to become his wife. It’s a sad story, but then, romantic tragedy seems to be a key element of selkie lore.

In THE SEA WIFE, I wanted to play on that element, but hopefully you won’t find Charley and Nessa’s story too sad! I like a little hope and happiness in my love stories after all!

Blurb

Charley and Nessa are from two different worlds. Nessa is a selkie and Charley is all too human. When selkies and humans fall in love, tragedy can follow. For Charley and Nessa, that never seems to matter when they’re together. But when Nessa’s seal skin is stolen, the lovers uncover all the reasons humans and selkies should stay in their separate worlds.

Excerpt

In seconds, Nessa was up on the ledge beside her, and Charley pulled her into her arms to kiss her fiercely. Nessa tasted of sea spray and sunlight, her long dark hair smelt of sea lavender, and her body fit perfectly against Charley’s, just as it always had. Now Charley was truly home.

They didn’t need words to greet each other, not really. They’d been meeting in this cave since Charley was fifteen. They’d been kissing since she was sixteen. Nessa slid her hands into Charley’s hair, freeing the messy red waves from the loose knot she’d tied them in. Nessa’s fingers trailed down Charley’s throat as they kissed, then down to grab the hem of Charley’s t-shirt. They broke the kiss briefly so Nessa could pull the t-shirt off and toss it aside. She fumbled with Charley’s bra, as she always did, and Charley giggled, as she always did, and slipped it off for Nessa. That too, was tossed away carelessly.

Charley skimmed her hands down Nessa’s bare back, relishing the little shivers she caused. She pushed away Nessa’s heavy locks and kissed the curve of her neck, licking drops of seawater from her skin while Nessa cupped Charley’s breasts and ran her fingers round her nipples. Charley sighed, burying her face in Nessa’s hair and soaking up her light, delicate touches. They’d been apart too long and she needed Nessa with an urgency that wouldn’t settle for light or delicate. She slid her arms round Nessa’s waist and pushed her to the blanket. She stood quickly, hopping like an idiot to kick her jeans off, and Nessa watched her with barely-contained laughter.

“If you just didn’t bother with clothes at all…”

“I’d be arrested for public indecency and you’d never see me again.” Charley dropped to her knees beside Nessa, trailing her fingers over Nessa’s stomach and down between her legs.

About the Author

Naomi likes writing, perfume, fancy tea, and unfathomable monsters from the dark spaces between the stars, not necessarily in that order. She has been writing stories ever since she learned how to write, but is still trying to master the art of biography writing. When she’s not dealing with werewolves, demons, or sea monsters, she’s hanging out with her cat and probably watching a documentary about Bigfoot. Excerpt:

Gemma still ached all over, but the pain was now dull and tolerable. She knew her reprieve would be short. More pain waited for her throughout the night. Something was different, however. Warmth surrounded her on both sides as she rested on what felt like a soft bed. A pillow cushioned her head.

She opened her eyes and bolted upright when a warm, calloused hand brushed her cheek.

“Easy, you’re safe,” said a deeply rich and sexy voice. “Lie back down.”

She looked around the spacious bedroom and even through the muted light could see the room was tastefully decorated with dark wood furniture matching the dark wood bedposts. A creamy white chaise sat in the corner with a cozy-looking rich brown throw blanket dangling off the side of it. She imagined herself lounging on it with a good book and a glass of wine sitting atop the small side table next to the chaise. Gemma did in fact feel safe, safer than she had felt in a very long time. She complied with the gentle command to lie down, pulling up the chartreuse-colored sheet that had pooled around her belly when she had sat up and she sensed a blush creep onto her cheeks while doing so. The memory of what had happened earlier in the forest with the two gorgeous men beside her came flooding back to her as well. They had given her a ray of hope when she had none left.

At first she was on her guard, wary of anyone who dared approach her lest they were part of Pollux-Moon or in allegiance with them. Then she became angry that two complete strangers thought it their right to order her around, to touch her without her consent. She’d been in too much pain to realize that they only wanted to help her. So in agony and unfocused as she was, at first she hadn’t even realized that they were her mates.

Mates. I have mates. She closed her eyes briefly and savored the delicious scents that surrounded her. Her pain had been reflected in their eyes earlier when she had locked gazes with them after she realized who they were to her. One of them had hair the color of midnight and eyes of gold. His hard gaze had softened when she stopped struggling and let him examine her. She found him looking at her when she opened her eyes again.

“What’s your name?” he asked. He had a slightly deeper baritone than the one who commanded her to lie down.

“I’m Gemma. But my friends call me Gem.”

“You have a beautiful name, Gemma, Gem.” His smile was breathtaking. He looked so open and friendly, a complete contrast to how he had looked earlier when he was being bossy and commanding. “I’m Jordan. Alpha of the White-Moon pack. This is my brother and beta, Kane.”

She looked over at Kane—hair nearly as dark as his brother’s, but eyes a mossy green—and managed a small smile. Both men were large and muscular and exuded a power hard to miss. They had identical tattoos on their left pectoral—a wolf’s paw print with a wolf face inside it. The eyes of each wolf, however, matched its owner’s. A full white moon stood out behind the paw and the White-Moon pack insignia, in elegant script, rested underneath. They both sported various other tattoos, but that particular one was breathtaking.

“You had us worried there, little wolf,” Kane said. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I just clawed my way out of hell for a temporary breather.” She hadn’t meant to say that out loud.

Kane looked suddenly angry. “Who did this to you?”
