About S.J. Maylee

S.J. Maylee fell in love with storytelling at a young age and with it came a deep-seated desire for everyone to find their happily ever after. She’s finding the happy endings for her characters one steamy story at a time. When she’s not reading or writing, you can find her caring for her garden, laughing with her two young sons, or dancing to her husband’s music. She’s a PMP (Project Management Professional), Nia instructor, and coffee addict. As a writer she has a tendency to break hearts, but she always glues them back together

Review: A Love Discovered by Ella Jade

I’ve been a fan of Ella Jade’s writing ever since I read A Love Stolen a couple summers ago. So, I was thrilled to learn she was finally able to write the second in this series. I jumped at a chance to review the book and I gobbled it up. 🙂 The concept just screams a great read: a sassy bar owner discovers love with a sexy, domineering professor. Oh yes, I was in.

A Love Discovered starts out fun. Cali Tate is a hoot. I loved how she pushed Carter’s buttons. The story moves into sexual tension land next. Wow, Carter sure knows how to turn up the heat, so yummy! It’s easy to see these two falling in love with each other, but I feared issues on either side could unravel everything. Queue the nail biting and page turning. 🙂

Ella Jade had me guessing right to the end how it would all work out. You’ll need to read a Love Discovered to see how she does it. Excellent steamy read. 5-Stars. I definitely recommend this book to those that enjoy contemporary erotic romance.

When they met, love was the last thing they were looking to discover…
Local bar owner Cali Tate has always been trendy, easy-going, and impulsive. She isn’t afraid to take chances, but her carefree attitude may have put her restaurant in jeopardy. Her failing business is beginning to take a toll on her, both mentally and financially. When her best friend asks her to do a favor and take some books to the town’s reclusive professor Cali welcomes the distraction. To her surprise, the sexy professor is nothing like she had pictured him.
Dr. Carter Stavros wants to be left alone. He’s set in his ways and doesn’t want to be bothered with the outside world. Wanting to escape the demons of his recent past, he moved to Steeple, taking a sabbatical from his teaching job to write a book. He wasn’t prepared for the spunky, persistent bar owner to invade his life. But the more she pushes, the more intrigued he becomes.
Neither one of them expected to find any common ground, much less fall in love. What happens when an OCD professor collides with a risk-taking woman who won’t take ‘no’ for an answer?

Excerpt:

After lunch, another hour of conversation, and a long swim, Cali lounged on the chair by the pool. Her shoulder-length blonde hair dried naturally and curled at the ends. Carter watched as she closed her eyes and enjoyed the afternoon sun. Her tanned skin glistened with sunscreen and her tiny bikini was almost dry. He wondered how many hours of intense workouts created a body like hers.
“Are you admiring me again?” she asked with her eyes still closed.
“How many tattoos do you have?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” She giggled.
“I would.”
As improper as it was, he couldn’t take his gaze away from her right nipple. The evidence straining against her damp bikini indicated a piercing of some sort. He’d never been more fascinated by anyone before. Throughout the years he’d seen quite a few attractive young women on campus, but he never acted on impulse when it came to students, no matter how tempting. Cali wasn’t a student. She was a quirky, attractive woman who was very much in touch with her sexuality. She turned him on. He wanted to explore with her.
“Four.”
He sat on the edge of the lounge chair, taking her right ankle into his hand. “Here.” He outlined the small butterfly that permanently marked her skin.
“That’s one.” She opened her eyes when he trailed his hand up her leg and to her hip.
It had been years since he had pursued a woman. He’d gotten married when he was twenty-four and stayed faithful through the whole fourteen years of that turbulent relationship.
“Two.” He swept his fingers over the pink-and-purple-colored rose petals sprinkled along her hip.
“Keep going.”
He took her hand in his and examined more rose petals on the inside of her wrist. “Do they hold significance?” He traced his fingertips over the tattoo, indulging in her smooth skin beneath his touch. The way her flesh prickled in response instigated his actions.
“I like roses.” She sat up, placed her legs across his lap, and leaned closer to his face. “My mother had the most beautiful rose bushes in our backyard.” She pushed her hair to the side and tilted her neck. “Four.”
“It’s exquisite,” he mumbled as he took in the ivy that started at her collarbone and flowed down the back of her shoulder blade.
“I wouldn’t have pegged you for a man who likes ink on his woman.”
“I’m not usually.” He ran his thumb from the start of the tattoo to where it ended on her back. He wanted to feel every inch of her forbidden flesh. She shivered when he stopped. “It goes back to those boundaries you don’t have.”
Reaching out, she placed her palm on his cheek, directing him closer to her lips. “The question is…” She brushed her mouth against his chin. “Do you have enough for both of us?”

Welcome friends old and new. I’m glad you came. Today, I’m sharing from the second in my Love Projects series, TAKING COURAGE which released on Thursday! You can find all the details here, including my giveaway.

LAST WEEK: Janna’s nerves were on full display because she thought she’d forgotten to tell Simon something. Turns out, it was a pretty important something, especially in the BDSM scene. THIS WEEK: I’ve skipped a couple great parts including a hot part. Oops. Sorry. At this point, Janna has remembered what she forgot to tell him.

“Look at me, pet.”

He knew. She was a cheat, and he knew. Her push of courage had gotten her through the door, but it couldn’t keep her here, not any longer. It was time to face the consequences. She told herself to remember the Simon from the scene, her first ever scene. He would always be her first Dom. She would try not to remember the Dom that was about to dismiss her.

I so wish I could give Janna a hug at his point in the story. Next week, we’ll enter Simon’s POV, but you don’t have to wait. You can pick up your own copy of TAKING COURAGE and find out everything today. 🙂 Also, TAKING CHANCES, the first in the Love Projects series is currently on sale at Evernight Publishing for only 99 cents. ROW80 Check-in #103 Release Day High Jinks

The writing challenge that knows you have a life.

I’ve survived my third release day. That’s right. Taking Courage, the second in my Love Projects series released on Thursday. Wahoo!

I was definitely better prepared for this release than my previous two, but it was still nuts and I have no idea if I’m doing it right.

Release days for me are filled with all kinds of fun things and many, many steps. I have a check list that I keep adding to which is very helpful. There are some things that gave me headaches with my first release that are now no big deal, like claiming a book as mine once it appears on Amazon or adding the ISBN on Goodreads or hunting down all the buy links or updating all the places on my website that are now out of date…

I’m three days post release and there are still things on my check list to be completed. I desperately want to get back to my WIP, but Taking Courage deserves my time and attention right now.

Here’s to my release list getting done in time to celebrate the anthology that’s releasing this Friday. Yikes in such a good way. 😀

If you want to know more about my new release and enter my giveaway, click here.

The Goals – week-10 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters-  not done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting- considering it done. I may not have worked on the WIP this week, but I did tons of stuff for my release.
  • Take care of and be kind to myself (start w/ a relaxing ritual, the healthy journey, and daily breaks from technology)- done. I spent time in my garden again this week. I love my backyard. 🙂

TAKING COURAGE BLURB:

Janna’s ready to make over her life and get out from under the controlling thumb of her father. She doesn’t want another failed arranged marriage. She’s ready to do whatever it takes for the career she wants, enter the lifestyle she craves, and to earn the trust and love of the man that has captured her heart, but heartbreak and career hiccups seem to be her destiny.

Simon’s still recovering after his last submissive lied her way into his life. He’s not ready for Janna and how she pushes against his prejudices. He needs to decide if he’s willing to lose her or if he’ll fight for her love and submission.

TAKING COURAGE Exclusive EXCERPT:

The setup: Janna has just asked Simon to forgive her for a mistake she’s made. He’s stopped her from leaving his office by stepping in behind her and pressing his hand against the door.

“You want to start over?”

“Yes, please.” The heat from his body soaked into her back. She wanted to press her hips into him. What would it feel like to be taken, right here?

“No more lies.”

“None, Sir.”

Her hips arched back to rub, seeking his hardness. She needed more. Her hips swirled over him, and he pressed her against the door. A moan escaped her, and then he was gone. She remained plastered against the door, afraid to move, not wanting to admit the moment was over. She peered over her shoulder and found him pacing the back corner of his office.

He couldn’t have gotten any further away.

“Do I need to apologize again?” She slowly turned around to face him and pressed her body into the door. A part of her wished the door would swallow her whole.

He stopped walking and looked out the window. She took a moment to look around his office. It was a mirror image of her office, except for the old boxing gloves on his bookcase.

“No. Maybe I should do the apologizing this time.” He crossed his arms over his sizable chest. She waited for him to continue. “I’m not going to bother you with my history.”

“History can be important stuff. It would help me to understand what’s going on here.”

“I’m sure you’d like that.” He continued looking out the window, probably looking at the ravine that had given her comfort earlier.

“I’m not sure you know what I’d like.”

He turned to look at her, smiling. “Is that so?” The corners of his kissable lips turned up.

She wanted to wrap her arms around him and tell him it would all be okay. Something or someone must have done a number on him. Lying could be his trigger. She needed to find a way to make it up to him.

“How can we get past this?” They were in the office, but their troubles had started in the club. How would they handle this sort of thing there? “You could punish me.”

“You’re asking for a spanking?” His cock clearly liked the idea. Her line of sight pulled to the obvious bulge in his pants.

“If that’s what you think I deserve, Sir.” She held her breath waiting for his answer. The line of appropriateness had clearly been crossed, but she needed this. She wanted this from him. Her palms turned cold and clammy as her heart pounded, waiting for his judgment.

He sauntered back to her, his darkening eyes trained on hers. He grazed her hip as he reached past her to lock the door. “Remove the skirt and panties.”

Mid Week Tease – Find Your Courage and Take A Chance

Click to see all the Mid Week Teases here at SJsWelcome to hump day my friends. Thank you to the fabulous Sandra Bunino for bringing us together.

Today, I’m sharing from TAKING COURAGE, Love Projects 2 which is releasing tomorrow from Evernight Publishing! SQUEE 😀

This is also my official “take a chance day“. One year ago today, I submitted a manuscript that would be my debut release. Aw! I still remember my crazy nerves from that day and the waiting afterwards, but it was all worth it. TAKING CHANCES, Love Projects 1 found a wonderful home with Evernight Publishing. So, this is your reminder, take a chance, TODAY!

This tease is from the beginning of TAKING COURAGE. Janna has finally found the courage to enter a BDSM club, but she forgot to mention one very important thing to her Dom for the evening.

____________

“Head up now.” Something was agitating the tender bundle in his arms. Simon wanted to help her through it. He may have taken a step back on his training responsibilities since his last experience, but Janna felt perfect under his hand. He’d have to find out if she’d be back.

“Yes, Sir.”

“What’s troubling you, pet?”

“I forgot to mention something earlier.” She tucked the blanket under her chin.

“Oh?” He rubbed in big circles around her back. “Why don’t you tell me now?”

“This was my first time, Sir.”

“Your first?” His confusion was thick. She tried to hide her eyes from him, but he saw shame. Sometimes newer submissives struggled with firsts. “Is this your first time being a guest?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Is your home club much different?” The safe rules of BDSM clubs were pretty universal, a real gift to traveling kinksters, but sometimes a scene in a different setting could be unsettling.

“I don’t have a home club, Sir. Well, not one that I physically visit.” She rubbed the edge of her blanket. “I’m an active member of their chat rooms.”

He hadn’t heard her right. No. She felt like an experienced submissive. Was she just playing the part? Anger ticked a quick pace up his spine.

“Are you telling me I just gave you your first scene?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Why did you withhold this information?” When she didn’t answer he added, “Why weren’t you honest with me?” He pushed her slightly, in part to get some distance and to keep her safe from him. “Answer me, now.”

“I forgot. It all happened so fast, and I forgot one of my lines.”

“Lines.” He finished shoving her from his lap and stood. “I hope you had fun tonight.”

“I did, Sir,” she said as she stood to join him. She tugged at the edge of the blanket that had stuck in the couch. “Please, let me thank you for tonight.”

“There is no need. You lied to me, and you had your fun.” He scratched his brow. “Go home now.” He took two storming steps away and stopped. He forced himself to return to her, disgusted by how good it felt to see her face once more. He stopped within an inch, forcing her to look up. “Do yourself a favor. Enter that club at home, get yourself in a training program, and do not ever lie to a Dom again.”

He wanted to hit something. What was it with submissives and their lies? The lie might have been smaller this time, but it was still a lie.

He thundered past the scene areas and kept walking, increasing his speed. Folks saved themselves and moved out of his way. Fury radiated down his arms curling his fingers into fists, almost there.

Some members thought Keller was crazy when he’d installed the small gym next to the club. When the roster quickly filled, it was Keller that was laughing all the way to the bank. Simon had a regular date with the bag hanging in the corner. He may no longer enter the ring, but the regimented workouts kept him strong and centered.

A couple more steps and he’d entered the gym and saw the innocent bag hanging right where he needed it to be. He slammed his fist into the bag. Pressure reverberated from his hand straight to his heart, but it didn’t release the revulsion.

“Damn her.”

He needed to get this out and get back on the floor. One of his best friends was about to collar his sub. The bag swung around. He walked around it and rolled his shoulders back. He wanted to witness the happiness a pair could have when things worked out and no one lied.

It was just a scene, something he could shake off, and she was just a guest sub. There was no possible way she could have felt as right as he thought. The anger was tricking him. She was just another lying sub. A sub to forget. A sub he would never see again.

“Damn her.”

An image of her regret filled face tugged at his resolve. His fingers flexed as he remembered her velvet channel. His cock twitched, and he hit the bag again.

 ____________

Oh boy! It looks like it’s not just Janna that’s in for a rough ride. Not to worry, It won’t be long before these two are back in the same room and sparks are flying. What a ride. I loved writing these two! TAKING COURAGE releases tomorrow. I hope you get a chance to read it. 😀

Pushin’ Buttons by Em Petrova – The Interview!

Pushin Buttons - Tour Banner

TITLE – Pushin’ Buttons
SERIES – The Boot Knockers Series
AUTHOR – Em Petrova
GENRE – western contemporary erotic romance
PUBLICATION DATE – June 10, 2014
LENGTH (Pages/# Words) – 56,000
PUBLISHER – Samhain Publishing

I’m so excited to have EM PETROVA on my blog today. 🙂 Squee! Okay. I’ll try and keep it together. She brought all kinds of great stuff on her latest release, PUSHIN’ BUTTONS and a GIVEAWAY TOO!

Welcome, Em! Here’s your first question: would you please tell us about your favorite place in the world?

In this place I wear mouse ears and no one judges, because they’re wearing mouse ears too! Yep—the happiest place on earth—Disneyworld!

Gosh, that is so true. Disney is the best. Tell us about yourself and why did you start writing?

I write hardworking heroes—in bed and out. I love to write about the common man, his problems and triumphs. It just so happens that my characters like to get pretty hot and steamy between the sheets, over hay bales, and especially in trucks. *grin*

I’ve been writing since I was 12. After my daughter passed away in 2000, I had 7 years of writer’s block. When I came out of the fog, I knew I wanted to pursue writing as a career.

I can’t imagine how painful that must have been and how your emotions have tumbled along the way. You’re a strong woman, Em.

How long have you been writing?

I began writing spinoffs of Sweet Valley High, featuring 2 cute blond twin BOYS, who incidentally every girl in my 7th grade class had a crush on! My friends would pass around the new installments of my series and beg for the next one. You can see how that would make a young writer high, right?

How fun! I remember reading those books. 🙂 When did you first consider yourself a writer?

As soon as I picked up a pen.

GREAT answer. Describe your writing space.

I share an office with a ton of dead animals. No, really. I am surrounded by taxidermy! Caribou, deer, red stags, antelope…

I claim one wall, which has all my covers plastered on it. My desk overlooks acres of countryside that run up to a state park. It’s a great set-up! One thing I’d love is a new chair. Mine is straight-backed and metal, but I’d love a plump leather chair that spins!

When you are not writing what are your favorite hobbies?

Sitting in the car for hours waiting for kids to get out of school/violin/guitar/dance/baseball/basketball/softball. Yes, that’s sarcasm you’re reading.

Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?

I started by soliciting agents. Eight-some rejections later, I pushed in a new direction. Publishing digitally is the best thing that has ever happened to me and to many, many others who are worth reading!

Can you tell us about a criticism you’ve received that pushed you into a better writing place?

In one of those early rejections, the agent told me he was very disappointed because my book’s premise was so good, yet my writing didn’t match the idea. That pushed me to get my craft up to par!

What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your books?

How easy it is to eat meals at your desk. Or how many grilled cheese sandwiches your children can really stand for dinner. Wait, that wasn’t the information you wanted?

Lol, but so true. 🙂 How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Besides my books, I write under 2 pen names, Hallie Knight (lesbian romance) and Ellis Greer (gay romance). Over the three names, I have over 40 titles, but it’s hard to choose my favorite. http://empetrova.com http://hallieknight.com http://ellis-greer.com

What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

Write what you love and the rest will come.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

Great characters and the best goal, motivation and conflict you can come up with.

Which one of your characters would you most like to meet in real life?

I love all of my characters, but I have a real soft spot for a few. One of them is Griffin from SOMETHIN’ DIRTY. He’s a 40something cowboy raising his infant daughter alone while taking care of his ranch and his sick mother. *melts*

What are you reading now?

Badly-edited biker book. Great story, but this writer needs some support LOL.

What turns you on creatively?

Music, weather, art, laughter, new experiences

What is your greatest fear?

Driving off a bridge.

*Shivers* I’ve had similar nightmares. What is your greatest extravagance?

My cowgirl boots cost as much as the rest of my shoes all put together! But soooo worth it! The leather and studs were made for my feet!

What is your favorite music (genre/artist/album/song)?

I listen to all types of music, but lately I’m a huge Miranda Lambert fan. She has a no-bullshit vibe that inspires! I especially love Mama’s Broken Heart.

What is the one thing you do after finishing a story?

Drink heavily until I pass out. No, I don’t do that. Much. Okay, never. I usually just squeeeee with my friends, because my family just waves me away. Mom wrote another book? Yawn.

Tell us something about your newest release that is NOT in the blurb.

These cowboys know how to make the most of an opportunity, no matter the place. *wink*

Tell us a bit about the projects you are working on now?

I have more books in the works for the Boot Knockers Ranch. Pushin’ Buttons is book 1 and Body Language releases in September 2014. I’m also working on a brand new biker series. Look for dirty-hot bikers with attitudes and tender hearts!

Thank you for having me and to all those who stopped by!

Thank you so much, Em! I had a blast chatting with you today. 😀

TOUR-ABOUTBOOK

Sexual dysfunction. The words make Sibyll cringe, but after one too many failed relationships, she has to face reality. Her O-button is broken, big time. Sick of sitting on the sexual sidelines, she books a week at Boot Knockers Ranch. If a passel of rugged cowboys vying to bring her bliss can’t get her off, nothing will.

Hugh had planned to sit out this week’s rotation of sexual therapy, but when he spots sultry Sibyll, he pulls rank. His bone-deep urge to possess her isn’t enough to coax elusive orgasms out of her body, though. And his resolve to give the lady whatever she needs wavers when she shyly makes a mind-blowing request.

Riggs stepped aside when Hugh muscled in to claim Sibyll, but he jumps at the chance to fulfill her ultimate fantasy—a threesome. But once they come together, all barriers are stripped away, exposing his love for the one man—and woman—he’d break every last rule to make his own.

TOUR-BUYTBRLINKc85e9-kindlebuy701d2-goodreadsTOUR-EXCERPT

Sibyll followed her gaze to the door between stage entrance and hallway several feet away. His back was to her and the other dozen women, his shoulders taking up most of the door frame and his white T-shirt molded to a chiseled back. Sibyll outlined his back muscles with her gaze, cutting a path down to a backside hugged by worn denim.
The cowboy pivoted. His face was illuminated by the overhead lights as he talked to the perky Isabel, the ringleader of this insane audition process.
“He has a black eye!” someone whispered.
“From a bar fight? Please let it be from a bar fight!” a woman with a gorgeous head of red hair and thick glasses added.
The cowboy raised his head and stared at the women. Suddenly Sibyll’s muscles tensed to run. She didn’t want to be here, had made the wrong decision. So what if I can’t experience “physical and emotional sensation at the peak of sexual excitation” according to Dictionary.com?
Isabel swooped through the door and pointed at the curvaceous brunette to Sibyll’s right. “You’re next.” Then she returned to the doorway, where she leaned and talked to the cowboy with the black eye.
Dust motes swirled hectically in the lights streaming from the stage. Sibyll tried to follow one with her eyes. Anything to keep from looking directly at that cowboy’s handsome, rugged face.
He was huge—tall and broad and muscled in all the ways that made the knot in Sibyll’s core want to unravel. But it never did.
Maybe if he fights to win me, I could.
He glanced up again, and the group of women tittered. The leggy blonde was led offstage on the arm of a cowboy wearing all black except his shiny silver and turquoise belt buckle.
“Wow, he’s fine. Jenny’s lucky to get him,” the virgin whispered after they passed. They stopped at the door, and the production manager moved to the side so they could pass.
The black-eyed cowboy with the two-day-old dark stubble on his jaw shook hands with both cowboy and contestant.
“You—sexy secretary—you’re next.” The production manager jabbed a finger in Sibyll’s direction.
She looked around herself. A slight girl to her right wore a peasant dress and thong sandals, and the tall, toned girl to her left wore sporty shorts and a T-shirt with an energy drink logo.
“Wh—? Me?” Sibyll pointed to her chest.
“Yep, you.” The production manager whirled back to speak with the cowboy, but he’d strolled through the door and was making his molasses-sweet way across the stage.
He passed the first group of contestants, who froze like a herd of deer in the middle of Highway 495. He dipped his head and positioned a battered brown cowboy hat on it. “Howdy,” he drawled, lips curled in the perfect dose of Southern gentleman and cocky bad-boy.
Feminine sighs sounded in response. Sibyll’s heart thumped as he neared her small group standing nearest to the stage. The closer he got, the more his bulk seemed to take up all the space in the room. Or maybe that was testosterone.
He dropped a wink at the virgin and leaned in to speak to her. “The black eye was nothin’ as glamorous as a kick-ass bar fight. Took a hoof yesterday working with the horses.” He straightened and settled his gaze right on Sibyll.
She stopped breathing as electricity passed between them.
That’s my imagination. I’m so keyed up.
The cowboy cleared his throat but didn’t say anything. Around them, women gawked. Hell, even Isabel the production manager stood with her mouth open, glancing between the huge cowboy and her clipboard.
“Hugh, you’re not filling in today, are you?” Isabel asked.
The man blinked, severing his hold on Sibyll. He shook his head. “Nah, I’m not competin’ today. I’m Master of Games as usual.” He pinned Sibyll again with his gaze. Something dark and exciting coiled low in her belly. What if this man did stand up for her?
I’d choose him in a heartbeat.

Inside Look with Cherrie Mack author of The Beginning (Witches Of The Bayou)

First, I would like to thank SJ for having me as a guest today. I am thrilled to be here.

My newest read is free, courtesy of Evernight Publishing. This paranormal romance is based on a character from A Late Summer Bloom. It occurred to me, Cecily Jareau, needed her story told. Why was she so jaded? What caused her to hate her royal coven? Why did she want to walk away from her power and her witchhood?

Because her story comes to a satisfying conclusion in A Late Summer Bloom, I thought it would be fun to go back, just a little and tell the story of how it all began. After all, don’t we all love to fall in love? That no holds barred, can’t keep our hands to ourselves, butterflies in the belly kinda love?

Yeah, me too. My hope is you take the time to download and read, The Beginning-Witches Of The Bayou and love it as much as I loved writing it.

Book Description:

A young and powerful witch of royal birthright longs to be human. When she meets a human man who gives her the love she’s never known, her decision to renounce her heritage is an easy one. But, not everything is what it seems.

This exciting, short story is a prequel to A Late Summer Bloom—Witches Of The Bayou.

Excerpt:

Cecily sat at Al’s House of Blue’s for the fifth night in a row. She sat in the same seat sipping the same drink and watching James play his trumpet. Having a date afterward had become a welcome routine. She was falling hard for the dashing, swoon-worthy musician and her libido had suddenly awakened from its life of hibernation. Wanting him on every level, not just physical, had her worried.

Did she dare to dream he felt the same way? He certainly gave off a territorial vibe when it came to her. And although being human was James’ advantage, it served as his drawback as well. The fact remained, she was a witch—a witch of royal status. The covens wouldn’t allow her to renounce her origins so easily.

She sighed. James hadn’t even kissed her yet and here she was thinking of a life outside the boundaries of magic.

“You look far away tonight. Everything okay?” James stood near, his aftershave soothing her anxiety.

“I’m fine.”

He pulled a chair up close to her and sat down, taking her hands in his. “No. You were thinking about something that made you sad. I could see it in your eyes.”

“And that bothers you?”

“It bothers me a great deal.”

She stared at his mouth, licking her lips. “Why?” And why haven’t you kissed me?

Without warning, swift and certain, James leaned in and kissed her lips. The contact surprised her, making her pull back. But as she leaned away, he leaned forward, not allowing her to move out of his reach. His lips claimed her, branding her with a fiery passion she never experienced. The crowd was no longer a consequence as she returned his affection. Their tongues entwined in a blistering exchange sending a mass of intense impulses bolting through her blood.

The velvety texture of his mouth was more than she could stand. His tongue, hot and slick, moved in a sinuous rhythm, owning her, imprinting his being within her heart. This wasn’t a kiss—this was a declaration. And Cecily wanted more of it. When he pulled away, she felt exposed, like a raw bundle of nerves left unprotected in the smoky atmosphere.

Applause could be heard from behind her, the audience clapping at their display. The glorious feeling disappeared quickly when Cecily recognized Brigitte standing at the back of the room. James leaned over to whisper in her ear. “After this set is over—I wanna do that again.”

She gave him a nervous smile. “Yes. I’d like that. But right now, I need to use the powder room.” She fanned herself, gave him a wink and rose up on wobbly legs. When she headed for the ladies room she saw Brigitte fall in step behind her.

After they waited for it to clear out, Brigitte leveled a stern look at her. “A human man? Really?”

Cecily stood with her hands on her hips. “James. His name is James. And yes I want a human man because ultimately, I want to be human.”

Brigitte’s eyes widened as if Cecily had committed the worst of sins. “They are unworthy. Not just of a witch but—but you? You have aristocratic blood in your veins. You can’t be serious.”

“Oh I’m serious. Neither you, nor Percy and his band of blue-blooded bullies are gonna change my mind.”

Brigitte’s facial features relaxed. “We’ll just see about that.” Cecily panicked. She’d been living as a human for over a week, performing no spells, no magic. She washed dishes and clothes and floors. She purchased food at the market, she cooked. And she was comfortable doing all of it. Now, about to embark on a human relationship, so close to a physical, loving connection, an obstacle was thrown in her path.

Just like always. Her life was one big hurdle after another.  Happiness was a breath away and once again she was faced with a complication she never saw coming. That kiss should have been one of her happiest moments but was ruined by the mere presence of another of her kind.

Welcome friends old and new. I’m glad you came. Today, I’m sharing from the second in my Love Projects series, TAKING COURAGE which is releasing Thursday! Plus, my cover is below. 😀

LAST WEEK: Janna was looking for someone to escort her into Club Voyage. THIS WEEK: I’ve skipped several pages and some sweet exchanges between Janna and her escort. Janna’s definitely nervous. She’s been planning this night for a long time. Let’s see how she’s doing.

His eyebrows drew tight, and his gaze searched her expression. The cracks in her veneer were no doubt calling out like a warning to this Dom, and she had a lingering feeling she’d already forgotten to tell him something. All the practiced conversation starters jogged around in her head. She couldn’t remember what she’d forgotten. Her belly quivered in unease, and her breathing increased. A metallic taste filled her mouth. She sucked on her lower lip. She’d split it with her worry if she wasn’t careful.

Even those that are best prepared can mess things up. Poor Jenna. Sure hope she can find the courage to go after what she wants.

ROW80 Check-in #102 Behind the Curtain of Summer Vacation

The writing challenge that knows you have a life.

My boys are now both on summer vacation. If my juggling was difficult before, now it just gets more interesting, especially since my husband’s schedule will get busier and busier.

I may not be packing as many lunches or screaming about how the bus is coming, but the time I find in the morning will get swallowed whole by interruptions and activities during the day.

If I want to keep my forward movement, I’ll need to refresh my anti-distraction skills. I’ll need to be prepared for my small windows of writing time. It’s a skill I’ve been working on, but it’s now sink or swim time.

There’s nothing exciting behind the curtain. It’s simple nose to the grindstone.

The Goals – week-9 results

  • Spend at least 1-hour a day with my characters-  not done.
  • Daily progress in writing craft, word count, editing, and/or plotting- not done. Watching your inbox and waiting for your cover to arrive doesn’t count, right? Definitely not done then. I worked on graphics for my upcoming release. Found the lines I want to quote and teasers I want to share. I did finally start a new read through on the WIP and got about 3/4 of the way through or 41 pages. I need to finish my read through and finish the final scene because my cover will arrive and my release day is coming.
  • Take care of and be kind to myself (start w/ a relaxing ritual, the healthy journey, and daily breaks from technology)- kind of done. I spent time in my garden this week. It gives me an endless supply of peace. So glad I’ve taken the time every year to nurture it. I didn’t however spend anytime on my healthy journey this week and I can tell.

Mid Week Tease – Time to Choose

Mid Week Tease – Time to Choose

Click to see all the Mid Week Teases here at SJsWelcome to hump day my friends. Thank you to the beautiful Sandra Bunino for bringing us together.

This week, I’m going back to my story in the upcoming Evernight Publishing Anthology releasing June 20th.

I’ve teased three times already from this story. Once from Colin’s private dungeon found through a secret passage in his office. Another when Mary arrives for her interview and appears to be not what he expected and finally from when Mary tries to change his mind.

Colin is interviewing Mary because his assistant is due to give birth very soon. Her name is Jen. Today’s tease includes the very next lines in their conversation. This is still in Colin’s point of view.

____________

“You want to work for me?”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“I can be inflexible and stubborn.” He could be a damn fool for lusting over the first applicant that walked through the door.

“I’ve also heard you called controlling, fiercely loyal, successful, and even extravagant.”

“True.” She’d done her homework.

A scream wrenched through the air, coming from his lobby.

“Jen.” He got up from his desk and ran.

He found her standing at her copier over a puddle of water.

____________

I think her water broke, lol. I hope Colin has changed his mind about Mary because his assistant is going on leave right now. Problem is, these two are destined to misjudge and unravel each forward movement. I know how it all works out and I have to say it’s quite delicious. 🙂
