“Excuse me.”

He turned and found the mostly sober woman from the bachelorette party, flashing her gorgeous brown eyes at him.

“We’re playing a few games tonight.” She tugged at the scarf around her neck, revealing a couple of ugly bruises.

His fist clenched. Beautiful skin shouldn’t be marred by such nastiness.

“Is it okay if I ask you a personal question?”

He forced his gaze back to hers in time to catch the tender vulnerability trapped in her stare. “Ask away.”

“Are you wearing boxers or briefs?” Her quick blush lightened his spirits.

“That’s a question I can’t answer.” He took a sip of his beer.

“Is that so?” She captured him with her enticing smile.

He leaned in. “I’m not wearing either.”

She looked down and her eyebrows rose. “Oh.” She bit her lip.

“Now, tell me what you’re wearing.”

She leaned in and whispered, “A tiny scrap of lace.”

Her friends hollered and she hurried back to her table. Nothing like a beautiful woman to warm his mood. He hoped to think about that scrap of lace for the rest of the night and what it rubbed against, but he worried he’d be thinking about the bruises and the shit who put them there.

This scene is from the opening pages. Keller is about to hand Jake the golden opportunity to get to know Lydia. Let’s see if she likes that idea.

“I’d like you to head the team on this.” Keller inclined his head toward Jake. “Pick one of the technical writers from this table, lock yourselves in a room, and get it done. I want a report tomorrow, my office, ten o’clock.” He stomped from the room and took another opportunity to sneer at each of them.

The room, without Keller’s presence, grew eerily quiet.

All attention turned to Jake. He towered over them as they waited for the chosen partner to be selected. Whispers bubbled up around her.

A door slammed down the hall, probably Keller letting off some steam. She didn’t want to think about Keller. She desperately wanted to fill her mind with one idea, that she could be the technical writer Jake chose. He could choose her.

Lydia’s father walked away from her when she was eight. She’s struggled to not let him affect her, but fears she wasn’t loveable enough to make him stay. The cold shower did its magic, clearing his mind of heated thoughts. He’d stepped comfortably back into his prison of rules and the conference room. The numbing effects were nullified at the sight of Lydia licking her fingers.

Keller was trying to kill him.

Her tongue escaped her mouth to smother her finger in quick caresses. Wet fingers could do a lot of naughty things, and his mind wanted to think of them all. They had a lot of work to do this afternoon, and his thoughts needed to stay on the task in front of them. Why did she have to keep licking her fingers like that? He’d never been so envious of a finger. He crept closer to her and her wicked tongue.

“I’m thankful this food is so tasty,” she said while staring at a fork full of coleslaw. “I’m not able to muster up any regret for the calories.”

“You shouldn’t regret anything, especially calories.” It should be considered a crime for a woman with curves like hers to watch what she ate. The corner of her mouth caught his attention. A smudge of barbeque sauce flirted with the edge of her lip.

“Ha, easy for you to say.” She looked up at him. “What is it? What are you looking at? Do I have something on my face?”

Before he could stop himself, he sat beside her, and his inquisitive finger reached out and rubbed the corner of her mouth. His finger hovered between them, an inch from her mouth. She licked her lips, and seconds ticked by. Nothing in the room captured his attention but her devilish mouth. Her tongue reached out and licked his finger.

“Thank you for helping me with this case.”

“We haven’t agreed to anything, yet.” Ethan said. “Tell us what you know first.”

“I’ll share what I can.” She rolled her shoulders and cracked her neck. “The gun runners you’ve been watching aren’t shipping guns.”

“Max and I found their safe house up near Milwaukee. It’s guns. We saw it for ourselves.” Ethan looked between her and Max.

“You didn’t see everything they were transporting.” Clair tilted her head.

“How is it you have any idea what they’re doing?” Max said.

“I have a man on the inside.” She sat up straighter. “When they take the girls from the strip club, they drive them to that cabin, and from there they’re somehow taken out of the country.”

“Has your man been able to tell you anything more about their routine?” Gavin asked.

“We haven’t heard from him since he left with the last shipment and we’re not supposed to until he has some idea how far down the rabbit hole goes. They’re scheduled to transport the next group of girls tonight. I’m not going to lose one more girl to these monsters. If you guys aren’t willing to step up, I’ll find someone else.”

“Now, hold up. I didn’t say we wouldn’t do it. In fact, this is the kind of situation we typically handle. I’m just not so hot over killing a woman.” Ethan sat back.

“I can tell you how she treats these girls once she has them locked up. None of them have seen the light of day in weeks, and she starves them more and more every day. When she does bring them food, she acts like she stole it, like she’s risking her own life for them. By now, more than half the girls have bruises covering their bodies and it will only get worse when they get where they’re headed.”

“Enough. We get it. I’ll take her out tonight.”
